They get around it by making your cancellation date the same as the end of your billing period.

We're not talking about contract end date.  We're talking about cancellation of service.  They will set that to agree with the end of your billing cycle so they don't have to issue a refund.

Hi Chick61. It saddens me to see that you've left the Verizon Wireless family. If you are due a refund for overpayment, we'll certainly get it to you. Refunds usually take 6-8 weeks to process after your final bill though, since delayed airtime or roaming charges may be a bit behind and we don't issue the refund until all the usage has been accounted for.

As you mentioned, not everyone whips out their Customer Agreement  to re-read the details. Which I completely understant. But I'd like you to visit http://vz.to/1hw817 and see the "Can I Take My Wireless Phone Number to Another Carrier?" simply because it refers to what happens with your final month of service should you chose to cancel or port out in the middle of the billing cycle and may help to answer your question about your final bill.

If you still have questions about the balance on your closed account, please follow me and send me a direct message with your name, mobile number, and billing password so I can take a look at the charges on your account.

Thank you

"Can I Take My Wireless Phone Number to Another Carrier?

You may be able to take, or "port", your wireless phone number to another carrier. If you port a number from us, we'll treat it as though you asked us to cancel your Service for that number. After the porting is completed, you won't be able to use our service for that number, but you'll remain responsible for all fees and charges through the end of that billing cycle, just like any other cancellation. If you're a Prepaid customer, you won't be entitled to a refund of any balance on your account. If you port a number to us, please be aware that we may not be able to provide some services right away, such as 911 location services. You don't have any rights to your wireless phone number, except for any right you may have to port it."

I am in the same boat as you. I ported my number the day after my contract ended. I had 3 weeks left in the billing cycle which I had paid. Customer service told me I would get a refund but had to wait 2 billing cycles. That has come and gone. No refund. I was able to do a chat last night with billing and they told me they do not issue refunds. If I cancel with Time Warner, they issues refunds. Verizon would be the last cell phone company I would ever go with. I started blogging about my story and I hope people really see what type of company Verizon really is. Shame on Verizon.

If you read the customer agreement you signed, you wouldn't have this issue

As per the customer agreement:

"If you cancel a line of Service, or if we cancel it for good cause, during its contract term, you'll have to pay an early termination fee.  If your contract term results from your purchase of an advanced device, your early termination fee will be $350 minus $10 for each full month of your contract term that you complete.  Otherwise, your early termination fee will be $175 minus $5 for each full month of your contract term that you complete.  Cancellations will become effective on the last day of that month's billing cycle"

You will not get a refund.

Like I said, shame on Verizon. Customer service, more than one, thinks that customers receive refunds. Having said that, reputable companies do offer refunds like Time Warner, etc. Yes, you are correct, it does state that but Verizon (removed)!!

@Chick61, I agree that it is unfair, but @jroeder is right. The Verizon Wireless Customer Agreement does say that your request to cancel service does not take effect until the last day of your billing cycle ends. The only exception to this provision of the Verizon Wireless Customer Agreement is if you cancel your service within fourteen days of service activation. Because you have cancelled service after the fourteen-day grace period, you will be responsible for paying for a full month of service, even though you did not use it. Also, instead of complaining about it, you might wish to start the arbitration process.
