You have to have a data plan. It is considered a multimedia phone. Multimedia phones require a data plan. I used to use that phone and it was good until it updated. It started to glitch on me. If the phone hasn't been updated, don't do it. It will suck. If you get the $10 plan, the phone can be activated. Just watch your data usage.

I found other discussions on here that say it does not require a data plan.

Trust me, it does. I went through the same issues. It does need one. Verizon wouldn't be telling you it needs one if it doesn't.

If you try to activate online on your own, the system will add the data plan. In order to get the EnvTouch (or any of the other "multi-media" class of phones, the ENv3, Voyager, Touch, Samsung Alias, etc) without a data plan you need to speak with a knowledgeable customer service rep who can set it up, block the data, and give you a plan without the data.
Let us know how it works out - if the first rep won't do it or doesn't know what you are talking about, politely thank them and call again till you get a rep that can do this.

I had the same trouble recently activating and ENV3 for my hubby and had to go into a store and they took care of it so I wouldn't have to pay data since those phones don't require it anymore. They did away with the data requirement on multimedia phones when they went to tierd data. Mary
