Fraud department

So I placed an order for a new line/iphone today online for my account. A few hours later, I get an email saying the Fraud Department needs me to call them.
I have been on hold for over 20 minutes now...how long does this process take?
And why do I even need to do this??

Took 55 minutes but I finally got through. She was nice. All I had to do was verify my account PIN and read back the number on the text she sent my phone number. Easy.
