My husband is the victim of identity theft. We have filed a police report and have closed the other accounts that were fraudulently opened in his name. He is incarcerated - the IRS will allow me, as his wife, to sign his tax return but Verizon will not allow me to shut the phones off without a power of attorney. I am deploying next month and do not have the time/funds to get a power of attorney. I do not need it for anything else - he is my husband! Verizon has been nothing but rude to me and has hung up the phone on multiple occasions. His father has also attempted to shut the phones off and each time he calls, they give him different information. We have a police investigation number and they still will not turn off the four phones that were set up using his stolen identity in a City and State we have never even been to. I can not believe that I will be deployed worrying not about my safety or the safety of my troops but about how Verizon refuses to assist in a fraud investigation with their own company. I am a Verizon customer, my husband has ATT. I was planning on bringing him under my plan once I return from overseas. Instead, I will cancel my phone and join him on ATT. I can call ATT and speak on his behalf (or the IRS or any credit card/bank account held in his name) without hassle or question. Be assured that I will cancel my Verizon plan and make sure that everyone one in my Unit and Company understands Verizon's lack of customer support. Heaven forbid this happens to one of my Troops while we are in Theater and they're spouse is struggling to get a Power of Attorney just to shut off a fraudulent account. Thank you Verizon for your poor customer service.
Calm down. You can buy the Power of Attorney form at any legal supply store. Costs a dollar or less.
He signs it, you sign and date it and then go to the county clerks office. In some places its even easier than that of which I wrote.
You can also write a certified return receipt letter with a copy of the police report, a statement saying the accounts are fraudulent and will not be paid, and that will be the end of it.

He is incarcerated. I cannot carry a document into the prison for him to
sign. Only an attorney may do that. Plus it has to be notarized by an
attorney at the time it is signed, which means I will have to pay an
attorney to go to the prison to have it signed. Do you work for verizon?

No I don't work for Verizon. Why is it every time I give factual information and the poster does not like the answer I and others get asked that question. Any notary can witness the signature it does not need an attorney. The jail should have a notary on staff who may assist you.
Under the Fair Debt Collections Practice Act once you notify the creditor in writing you are disputing the charges they have to stop collections and must investigate your claim. You would think, wouldn't you? But no, it was not sufficient. We have shown
them everything and they still insist on the power of attorney.
That's because you need both POA and the report. The POA is to get into the account and the letter/report is to stop charges.
