If I buy my own phone, do I need a 2 year contract with Verizon?

I'm currently on Sprint and my family is switching to Verizon at mid-June. My current phone is on the verge of not working and I'm looking for something to tide me over.

My idea is to buy a used phone from somebody and sign up for a single line LTE plan (2 GB data, unlimited talk/text for $75). Can I do this without a 2 year agreement?

The reason I want to do a used phone instead of getting a new phone now is because I'm waiting out to see if the rumors for the Galaxy F/Galaxy S5 Prime are true.

The only time you are locked into a 2 year agreement is when you get a subsidized phone.
