If I get a text message asking me to verify my account, it is safe to assume it is a scam message?

Most likely a scam to get your log in credentials - just go to verizonwireless.com and log in to verify your account is as it should be.  If the link is anything other than verizonwireless.com  (may have verizon in the name but it's not the right link) it's likely a scam.

Oh, and if you still have the text, forward it to SPAM (7726) so it can (possibly) be traced and dealt with.
