International roaming?

Hey all,

I'm trying to figure out this whole deal with international roaming and service and whatnot. It's my first time traveling abroad and I'm not sure how to take and understand all of this information.

I have the iPhone 4, which I surmise won't (?) work on international networks? I'm not exactly sure if I'm correct, I've just been reading around and trying to look at the basics.

Anyway, I'll be traveling to Portugal and I'll be with my best friend and his family, so I don't really think I'll need service anyway; it won't bother me to not have access to my phone. However, I would like to use it on wifi and such to upload pictures while I'm there. Am I right in that my phone just won't be compatible with international towers and that I won't have to worry about connecting and being charged? Or will my phone still connect and just charge me loads and further charge me while looking for signal, etc.? Is it recommended I purchase/enable any sort of service from Verizon before I go or should I just not worry about anything?

Thanks guys.

If you use Wifi you should be fine.  Your phone shouldn't be able to connect to towers in Portugal, as the network is GSM and the (Verizon)  iPhone 4 is only CDMA.  If it is an iPhone 4S, you would have to be more careful.   To be extra sure, you should be able to turn all cellular data off, then the only connection will be via wifi.

No need to purchase anything from Verizon, you would need either a new phone or use the Global Phone rental, which probably isn't needed if you are with friends with their own working phones...
