Keeping Your Number When Leaving a Company

I have had the same phone number for nearly 30 years. When I got a promotion at my company, they offered to pay for the phone plan. I am now ready to leave the company and would like to keep the number I have been using, do I need to get someone's permission to do that?

Yes. Your company should have a process to transfer the number to you. It would be similar to the transfer of service process. Transfer your service FAQs | Verizon Wireless

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Thank you Ann154. So if they refuse to let me take my phone number when I leave, basically I have no recourse? They put me on their plan 1-1/2 years ago so the number I have had for 30 years is basically theirs now?

You should be able to get the phone number back especially considering you allowed them to take over the line originally. I personally know that it is what happens at one Fortune 500 company I'm familiar with. FYI I'm not referring to Verizon Wireless.

You should read the contract you signed when you allowed them to put your number on their account.

Basically, they own it now and since it is associated with their business they can refuse to give it back to you. The reason makes sense. That number is now a point of contact for the company and if a customer calls you on that number after have left the company and maybe started working for a competitor you could potentially poach their customers.

I am not saying it would happen that they would keep your number but there is a chance and there might not be any recourse.
