SMS and ATT failures

There are a LOT of discussions on this system relating problems of Verizon users either not being able to receive, send or both to ATT users using the SMS and/or MMS features.  I have had this issue with ATT iFone users who send me SMS msgs and I get a blank msg - that is, my fone dings, and a msg header appears, but the contents are blank.  The people who send me these msgs complain that it is my fault for having an older handset (yes, it is a Treo 700, so it is old).  If they send an MMS with a foto in it, the text part comes thru with the foto, but if it is just text in an SMS msg, it is blank.  And it is really blank - forwarding it to an email acct does not disclose that there is any text hidden in the msg.

Several other users who have complained about this have indicted that Verizon CAN fix this, on a one by one basis, IF you complain long and hard and often only after going through more than a few Verizon tekkies until you find one who is responsive.  I do not have a Verizon contract, and I am going to get a new fone soon (either a BB10 or a Windows8),  Should I just jettison Verizon and be done with it, or is their coverage worth the shoddy service?  And, if they can fix it for individual customers, why can't they fix it for ALL customers?
