The only way I can retreive voice mail is to key in on my phone pad *86

When I tap the voice mail icon all I get is a question if I want visual voice mail. Shouldn't I just be able to tap on icon to see if I have msgs?

Tapping the icon will show you your messages, IF you have Visual Voicemail activated (there is a free basic version for smartphones and a premium version for $2.99 a month).  The icon is for the Visual Voicemail app and is not a shortcut for basic voicemail.

If you do not have that installed, activated and set up as your voicemail default, then *86 is the way to get your voicemails, just the basic, voicemail service.
