I have the family plan with unlimited data and my son lost his phone so we used an update on annother line to get him a new phone and they removed his unlimited data from his number only. I called verizon and they said that there was nothing that could be done. I spend 400 a month on my account and I told them I am switching carriers, every time a phone ends its contract I am pulling off the ones that do not have the unlimited data until I have no phones left on virizion, I know there are carriers that offer unlimited data and they will gladly take the business from verizion. Maybe if enough people leave they will change their policy

They are correct, you cannot go back since you did the subsidized upgrade on a line that had unlimited data. Where did you do the upgrade, online or in a store?

I believe the only carrier that still offers unlimited data to new customers is Sprint, and it is only while you are on their network. If you roam off it, you do not have it.

My understanding is that she would lose the Unlimited Data on the donor account rather than the account she transferred the upgrade to (her son's account). I believe this has been Verizon's practice because it is the donor account that gets the 2-year contract extension, not the recipient (son's) account. Has this process changed?

You are transferring the upgrade onto a different phone and activating it on that one. The contract of the original phone line gets extended, but the plan change will occur on the line that is being upgraded. If you did not care about unlimited on the original line, you could have done the upgrade on that line, and then swapped the 2 phones.

Verizon informs that you can upgrade a line and then when the phone arrives simply accept the terms and conditions in the automated system, without actually activating the phone on that line. After accepting the terms and conditions, the customer can contact Verizon who will manage activating that phone on the line that they prefer the phone be transferred to. This process preserves Unlimited data on the recipient line. If, however, the Customer has Unlimited data on the donor line, it will be lost since the donor line contract is extended 2 years with the discounted price paid.

I fail to understand why the individual who started this thread will not be assisted by Customer Service to remedy the problem that resulted from her not being aware of a fairly esoteric, non-transparent process. I recommend that this Customer contact a Supervisor to review what has occurred and hopefully achieve a satisfactory result.

hi,

so if i use another persons upgrade on my family plan (they have a basic flip phone with no data plan), get the phone in the mail, i can accept the terms of service and all that without activating it on their line and use it for myself?  i thought it had to be activated on the line of the person who got the upgrade for 24hours before switching?

Yes, that is correct. When I posted this message last year Verizon representatives definitely had this capability and the method I outlined was indeed the simplest way to get the desired result. I suggest that you first contact Verizon and speak with a Supervisor to confirm what I informed. Ask that they place a note on your account to this effect. In that way you will be assured that Verizon understands your intent. They will then work with you to guarantee that you get the desired result.

This is a very old thread.  I would not necessarily go by anything you read here.  I do know that you can upgrade one of the lines on your account that has a basic phone and order a smartphone and a 2GB tiered data plan.  Then, after you receive the phone, you move it to your unlimited line and put the basic phone back on it's line and cancel the 2GB data plan.  The exact mechanics of doing this, I'm not sure and suggest you speak with Verizon.  If you do it incorrectly, you will end up paying full retail for the phone.  And, of course, you have now obligated the basic phone line for another 2 years.
