Upgrade fees?

I have been a Verizon customer for many, many years. The truth is I'm not sure how long I've been their customer but it's been at least five years, probably closer to ten.  I am looking at upgrading the devices on my family plan (2) and upon thorough questioning, found out they are now charging a $30 "upgrade fee" per device.

I called their customer service department, was very friendly with the gentleman who answered, and he basically told me to take a hike.  I let him know that I am out of contract (which I am sure he was aware of) and that I was unwilling to pay this fee as I have been a customer of there's for many years and had never seen this type of charge before.   I find it a shame the man I spoke to was unwilling to do anything to help me over a total of $60, compared to the (approximate) $4500 I give them over the life of each contract.  I am now seriously thinking about taking my and my family's business to Sprint or otherwise, and considering we are out of contract, this is a viable option. Has anyone else had experience with this upgrade fee? I would like to continue doing business, but their unwillingness to accommodate their customer is unacceptable.   I would sincerely appreciate if they would at least give the appearance of placing the customer first instead of essentially saying "my way or the highway".  I would appreciate if Verizon would address this issue but if they are unwilling to do so, it's no skin off my nose, but $4500 out of their revenues, as insignificant as this seems, it is a place to start.

This should be a dead idea on this forum at this point.

Here are the highlights:

Every carrier does it

Cellphones cost more to the companies these days because users get confused on all the features

Upgrade fee won't be waived at all, ever.

Verizon has GAINED customers every quarter since they instituted this policy over a year ago, at this point it has been adopted by the general user base and it isn't going anywhere

Verizon is a service provider, in some areas the best, and you pay for service... only you can decide what it is worth to you

Sprint charges $38, which is higher--enjoy

Call customer service and ask them to waive the fee. Problem solved.
