I very well might come to the conclusion that VZW's overall plan is better than others.  But the point is, after being a long-time, loyal and very satisfied VZW customer, this whole fiasco is causing me to finally decide to check out the alternatives. Whether I eventually switch or not will depend on what I find.  From the tone of many of these other comments, I won't be the only one shopping around . . .

I think that's why a lot of existing customers are upset. First we get hit with a $30 fee for upgrades (what a great reward for staying with the carrier for another two years) and now we're being pushed into other plans that will force us to pay more to get less out of the service. I don't think the new plans are all that bad for new customers. In my case, for two smartphones and 4gb of data, it would cost $140 plus taxes and the usual hidden fees. Right now, for 1400 minutes that I don't come close to using, no text (no 13 year old girls in the family) and two unlimited data plans, I pay about $135 before the aforementioned extra fees. I only use about 700mb a month (with a rare exception when I travel) between both phones most of the time. So in the end, it's $5 extra to get unlimited minutes that I don't need, unlimited text that I don't want and a lot less data that that I actually use. For $5 a month, Verizon is making me question whether or not to continue to be a customer. Doesn't seem like a great move on their part. I think it would have been smarter on their end to let current unlimited data customers keep their plans and start throttling download speed about 50% after around 2GB of use for each line. That would help with the fact that they didn't invest in their network enough despite the fact that their profits have got to be through the roof from the smartphone craze that grew so quickly over the last few years.

PJ after doing some Looking at the Plan structure these Plans don't Look to bad plus it would get me totally off an away from the alltel plan structure an some of the Headaches that at times are Associated with them. Meaning for one the different PRL the phones have to use.. Wi-Fi will surely come into play more for some!  i use mine all the time when at Home..b33

I am very upset about this new plan. First they take away new every 2 and now this! I am currently grandfathered into my unlimited data plan which is expensive enough! I will look into other providers for sure after 15+ years of being a loyal customer there is no longer anything to keep me with verizon, unless I want to pay full price for a new phone to keep my current contract...thats crap!

What do you mean there?

well your main plan doesn't have to change.  Those currently with a tiered data package can keep it OR switch to a Share Everything.. The only thing that HAS to change is those that have unlimited data and then you still have the option of choosing the normal tiered data package on your existing plan rather than switching entirely to a share everything plan.

As for the second part, you can use any line on your plan to upgrade and then place that phone on yours to maintain unlimited data.. Think I'll make a thread later if I get bored at work that will hopefully clear up some of the confusion with the new plans

I think the tactical issue here is that Verizon doesn't realize they really have two customer bases that use their devices very differently.  They have people who talk and text a lot, for whom unlimited talk and text is a great thing, and then they have Smartphone users who use email more than text, and quite frankly probably don't use that much talk.

Trying to have a single plan that meets both of these customer bases and still makes a decent profit made a plan that no one likes.

If i could get a plan with the exact same data functionality and pricing, but had no texting (or maybe 100-250 texts) and 700-1000 shared minutes and the monthly on the phones was more like $15-20 for dumb phones and $25-30 for smartphones (keep the $10 tablet, I like that...). I would be willing to switch the next time I needed a new phone, and maybe earlier.  It is that the monthly phone price is so high to cover unlimited texting and talk that I will never use that makes these plans useless to me.

I did the math. My price goes up if I have one line with the new data plan. If there are two or three people on the plan it starts to drop dramatically in price. I never go over 1G of data usage because I'm on wi-fi 95% of the time. So, I have to decide if I want to pay full retail next time to keep my unlimited data plan or switch to Sprint when my contract is up or get the subsidized price when my contract is up and switch to the tiered data.

I agree, $40 per smartphone, and that does not even include data, is hard to swallow. To me, there should be just a flat fee per device, and then add the data on top of that. I think people with basic phones are the ones that use more minutes than the people with smartphones. Keep the same plan ideas, but make the devices cost $25 or $30 per month, and that would be more reasonable. IMHO...

Well I only have 1 device and don't want nor need a 2nd device or line and I have unlimited data and want to keep it and want to still be able to get subsidized upgrades. $500+ is way too much for a phone. Not to mention that even if you were to pay that much you still have to pay the same rate on the contract as someone who gets a subsidized phone basically, so you're paying for the phone twice in essence, which is BS and simply theft IMO. Since I want to keep things as is, they are giving me 2 choices, keep my current device and pray that it doesn't decide to stop working, or switch to a different carrier (or go pre-paid).

Well after 10+ years with Verizon and being very happy with the service and somewhat happy with the pricing I will be terminating my contracts beginning in August.  We have 5 phones in our family and pay almost 500 a month for them. (Are you listening VERIZON?)  We WILL be cancelling our service as each contract expires because of the many additional fee's and changes to plans over the past couple of years.   My biggest complaint is the discontinuation of the unlimited data.  What a horrible decision you made there.... way to go.  I will be shopping around for a more feasible carrier for our family's needs.

Sincerely,

P.O.'d customer

P.S. - You would think that in this economy a company such as Verizon would be looking at ways to give the customer MORE for LESS not the other way around!
