Verizon customer no sevice

I spent over two Sunday afternoon with verizon customer service. What I want to do is port my contract number over to a prepaid phone. After over two hours I was told that there would be a $35.00 activation fee. I would also lose the money in my prepaid account. What kind of service is this? I have been a verizon customer for over ten years, but now Sprint and ATT&T look much better. Verizon appears to be out to soak every dollar they can from their customers. When my prepaid money runs out it will be the end of verizon prepaid for me. Then I will shut down my monthly service. Straight talk looks extremely good to.
