What is the normal warranty coverage period and how does it differ from the "extended warranty" available at a monthly fee?
If the Droid malfunctions after my 30-days, am I out of luck for an exchange without an extended warranty?

The standard warranty that comes with any phone you purchase is for 1 year. It covers any type of manufacturer defect of failure. It DOES NOT cover any type of damage or lost/stolen cases.
The extended warranty is just that. Your warranty is extended beyond that 1 year as long as you're paying the additional cost.
