Whenever I am in my house, I always get bad cell phone reception. If I go to Starbucks or to someone else's house, I get amazing reception. It works perfectly. It's wonderful. Then whenever I am downstairs in my own home, I get one bar.
Why? What's wrong with my house?
I noticed you specifically mentioned using your phone "downstairs." Are you going into an enclosed basement with boxes, furnitures, or electrical equipment? It sounds to me that your issue is an "environmental issue" or problem with connecting based on physical and non-physical barriers. I know that microwaves also severely disrupt internet and cellular signals. (It's crazy how microwaves are almost like domestic EMP devices!) Similar equipment that emits radio waves or radiation in your basement could prevent your device from connecting to the cellular tower....also, just not being close enough to the cellular tower is another possibility. Perhaps your starbucks or friend's house is closer? It doesn't seem like a hardware issue since your phone appears to be working elsewhere. Try removing some clutter in your house and unplugging unnecessary electronic equipment. Worse case is your home isn't very wireless-friendly, structurally.
There can be a number of factors causing trouble in your home. Building materials can be a significant factor as well as appliances using radio waves. If you have Wi-Fi in your home, Wi-Fi Calling is available for many devices. You can learn more about Wi-Fi Calling here:
