Why are the verizon deals only good on the payment plan?

I prefer to buy my phones outright. T-mobile has $200 instant savings off the retail price of the Note 9, but Verizon wants to lock people into a 2 year deal with bill credits to prevent paying it off the very next day and therefore not getting the discounted price of the phone.

pool_shark,

New phone deals are exciting and we want to make sure you can get a device in a way that works great for you. I certainly understand preferring the option to pay up front. We have chosen to make many of our current deals only available with a device payment. There are options which can help though. What is the reason you prefer to pay up front? Please share details so we can help find the best options for you.

You could have still paid a large amount of purchase price as a down payment on the purchase which would have reduced the amount financed on the device payment agreement. You would still need to keep the DPP agreement for the duration of the agreement over 24 months in order to qualify for the bill credits.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

The reason I prefer to pay upfront is because I don't like being contractually obligated. If I pay upfront I can leave any time if I choose.

It seems to me that the deals are offered only on the payment plan option to keep customers bound to you via monthly bill credits and if they want to leave then the deal is off and they must pay the full retail price minus what has been paid.

I think you're missing the point.

I prefer paying the entire price upfront, no financing at all, but the deals are only on the financing options, no deals when paying full price.

Then look elsewhere for the deals. I think Best Buy had $400 off the Pixel 3 models that was not tied to the DPP.

Thanks, but I don't want a pixel I want a note 9. The best buy deal was also based on the payment plan.

You think someone is going to give you hundreds off phone just so you can leave a few months later? Also you are not contractually obligated to stay, you just lose any remaining bill credits.

As stated, T-Mobile offers a $200 instant discount, so the answer to your question is yes, someone will do it.

You are contractually obligated if you want the discounted price.

If you pay it off you don't pay it off at the discounted price, you pay it off at the full price minus what you've already paid. It's basically the old 2 year upgrades of old.

Best Buy and Samsung had discounts off the top off and on since the phones (S9/S9+/Note 9) came out.
