Why does Verizon charge extra for visual voicemail?

I recently dropped my AT&T Iphone and bought a droid because it was said to be just as smooth and useful. WRONG!! after starting to set up my phone , i noticed that visual voicemail was an EXTRA feature. Why? we already pay EXTRA for the data plan, the least they can do is give it up with the data plan like AT&T.

I agree that it'd be nice if the Visual Voicemail fee were waived if the customer had a certain type of phone or a certain calling plan or a certain data plan. But unfortunately I think there's always been a fee for that service ever since it was launched.

In his/her post, nmchileman posted a link to an alternative to Verizon's Visual Voicemail. I've heard of it on another site and have seen positive reviews for it.

And here's an additional suggestion/alternative available to some people (with [certain] smartphones):

http://community.vzw.com/t5/Android-Devices/Visual-Voice-Mail/m-p/150003#M10216

"Since nobody explained the GV [Google Voice] reference to visual voice mail:  You can automatically have your "missed calls" forwared to your Google Voice account, and if you install the "Google Voice App"  on your Android, you have "visual voice mail" via the GV application, as well as get transcripts of the voice mail sent to your email.

(This relaly only touches the tip of what can be done with GV, but it is why the discussion is tied into VVM)"

I've seen you mention this before - but never looked into it.  I just signed up (like 10 minutes ago!) and it looks to be as awesome as you said!!  And free is even better - plus you don't need to have a smart phone or data plan.  I was about to add my contact list when the site went down for maintenance  :smileysad:   but I'll go back in later and get my contacts set up.

Thank you - thank you - for continuing to post this until I finally got it.  :smileytongue:
