Why is 3G terrible on a 4G phone?

Before 4G I had zero problems browsing the internet and playing videos from YouTube on a 3G signal. Now that I have a 4G phone, whenever I drop out of 4G service the phone is basically unusable. This makes zero sense to me and I would love an explanation.

This is called oversaturation. It's been happening recently because Straight Talk is overselling Verizon service. The more people you have using a particular cellular tower, the slower your speed.
