I cannot shut it off and I do not know how to take out the battery...any suggestions?

I'm so glad you didn't try to remove the battery from your XOOM since it doesn't have a removable battery.
I'm hoping by now you were able to gain access to your XOOM again. However should the situation ever arise again (when your XOOM is frozen) you can press the power and your volume button to reset it.

Hello newbee,
Hopefully you have gained access to your Motorola Xoom. If not then a factory reset that my co-worker is recommended as the next step. If you are unsure as to how to complete this type of reset then I have provided a link below with the step-by-step method on how to do so. In your situation, the alternate method would be the preferred process. Here is the link:

The second link is the steps on how to activate and setup the Xoom after the reset. Prior to completing the reset, I encourage that you verify that your personal information is backed up on your Gmail account, such as contacts and/or calendar entries. Other information, like picture, videos, or music, may be erased from device. Once you have the device setup properly then please test call services on the tablet.
