AOL says an account will be deactivated if you don't log in every 90 days (and deleted after 180 days). Does that apply to Verizon customers too?
Does using the SMTP server count as logging in?
Does using the POP3 server count as logging in?

Yes. Thedeactivation and deletion policy's apply. There actually were messages earlier this year from Verizon mentioning the 6 month deletion.
Pop login counts. Smtp might count as well. Imap also counts.
