Cannot Send/Receive Email via iPhone since 2:00pm on 5/12/15

All of a sudden my iPhone (5s) will not download or send email. I received an email at 11:00am but since then cannot download any that are on the netmail.verizon.net server. I made sure my settings were correct (pop.verizon.net, etc.)
My husband's iPhone (4) and iPad (air) has the same problem.
Here's the error that comes up when it tries to contact the server:
"The mail server "pop.verizon.net" is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings."
FYI - the pop send/receive verizon email works online in my outlook/msn email

works now...would be nice to find an "outage report" on Verizon's page. spent too long trying to troubleshoot this
