Hi,
I just had FIOS installed, and can get on the internet, and receive emails via Eudora 7.1.0.9, but cannot send emails.
After doing some research, I made sure I was using outgoing.verizon.net as smtp server, checked "use submission port 587" and changed "secure sockets when sending" to "never".
The Eudora error message I get is:
"There has been an error transferring your mail. I said: MAIL FROM <my email address> and then the SMTP server (outgoing.verizon.net) said: 530.5.7.0 No AUTH command has been given."
I can send email through my previously used cable modem just fine.
Any suggestions?

I don't use Eudora so I can't be specifc, but with mail clients I do use (Windows Live Mail and Outlook) when using port 587 you need to check "Outgoing Mail Sever - My server requires authentication." And then "Use same settings as my incoming mail server."
If there are similar settings in Eudora maybe that will give you a clue.

Thanks Eljefe - but I don't think that is it.
Eudora has "allow authentication" in a couple of places, both of which I have turned on. But I don't see anything like "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" in any of the Eudora options.

Ok. Hopefully someone who is using Eudora will come along with the solution.
Good luck.

Try using port 25 when connected on the Verizon Fios network. Port 25 is blocked when accessing mail servers not on the VZ FIOS network.
Also, is there an option to enter a username and password for the outgoing mail server?

make sure you are not using SSL for anything, and follow the instructions here.
Eudora 4.x +
- Go to Tools > Personalities to open the personalities window.
- Right-click on your personality and select Properties.
- Under the SMTP server, select the option for Authentication allowed.
- Incoming mail server (POP3😞 incoming.verizon.net
- Outgoing mail server (SMTP😞 outgoing.verizon.net
- Outgoing Server Port Number: 587 Why is this important?
- Your Verizon Online user name (without the @verizon.net)
- Your Verizon Online password
- Under servers and smtp authentication is required. no ssl settings are supported.

Thanks Hubrisnxs.
With regard to Verizon online user name and password - I'm using Eudora to access my business email, which is not at verizon.net. Can I do this without specifying my Verizon online user name and password?

If you want to use the Verizon outgoing mail server then you must specify the username and password.
If you want to use your company's outgoing mail (which is certainly possible) then you would have to specify their mail logon credentials and ports.

just like the previous poster said you can do that in a couple different ways.
The way that I would recommend is build your personality in a mixed fashion.
so your incoming mail server info will carry your companies info. and the outgoing you should use the following.
outgoing.verizon.net
define the username using your verizon credentials.
that authentication thing
and then change the port to 587
eudora website says the following about changing the port for outgoing
Eudora for Windows
Eudora has chosen to hide the Port change option in version 6.0 and above, to enable changing ports:
1. Navigate to your Eudora install directory.
2. Look in the Eudora directory for the directory "extrastuff".
3. In this directory is a file named "esteric.epi". Drag (copy or move) this file into the main Eudora directory. There will now be options extra listed, including a Ports Page.
To change the outgoing mail port from 25 to your new assigned port.
1. Launch Eudora.
2. Drop don the Tools menu, and choose Options.
3. Click on Ports, change from 25 to your new assigned port.

Thanks for all the suggestions, still no luck, but at least I'm getting a different error message.
I turned on authentication.
I set the incoming mail server as incoming.verizon.net.
I set the outgoing mail server as outgoing.verizon.net.
I'm using port 587.
I used my Verizon Online user name (without the @verizon.net)
I used my Verizon Online password.
I set SSL settings to "never".
The current Eudora error message is:
<Dominant>, Logging into POP Server, PASS [time]
There has been an error transferring your mail. I said: PASS <shhhh! Don't tell anyone.> and then the POP server(my user name@incoming.verizon.net) said: ERR (AUTH) Authentication failed.
Any more suggestions??

you're almost there, and all the hardwork is done.
leave all the outgoing stuff alone and ONLY change your incoming stuff.
change your incoming mail server to the server that your email address uses, and put your email and password for the incoming stuff. like I mentioned all the outgoing stuff is perfect, so only play with the incoming stuff, and change that to match your current email providers incoming information

I think I just prematurely sent a response to Hubrisnxs. I'll try again.
I don't think I've made any progress. But I have done some more experimenting.
First of all, for clarification sake, let's say my 2 email addresses are
myverizonname@verizon.net
and
myemailname@mycompany.com
What I'm trying to do is send and receive email, using Eudora, via the 2nd email address, myemailname@mycompany.com, over a new Verizon FIOS internet connection.
Here are the only options (in CAPS) that Eudora provides, what I've tried, and what has or has not worked:
REAL NAME: my name
EMAIL ADDRESS: myverizonname@verizon.net (doesn't work, either to send OR receive email)
myemailname@mycompany.com (does work, but only to receive email)
MAIL SERVER (INCOMING): verizon.net (doesnt work)
mycompanyname.com (works to receive only)
USER NAME: myverizonname (doesn't work)
myemailname (works to receive only)
SMTP SERVER (OUTGOING): outgoing.verizon.net (can receive only, see above)
Also, as noted earlier, I've checked a box to Allow Authentication, and I'm using Port 587.
In addition, when Eudora first starts up it prompts me for a password. I can receive email using the password for the mycompanyname.com account in conjunction of course with setting the above information to mycompanyname.com, etc.......but I canNOT receive email when using all verizon.net information including my verizon email address. incoming.verizon.net, and my verizon password.
Any other ideas??

It should look like this
REAL NAME: my name
EMAIL ADDRESS: myemailname@mycompany.com
MAIL SERVER (INCOMING): mycompanyname.com
USER NAME: myemailname
SMTP SERVER (OUTGOING): outgoing.verizon.net (can receive only, see above) port 587, no ssl, authentication as discussed earlier and most importantly your verizon username and password should go here.
fingers crossed, and I am pretty sure I didn't forget anything.

There's no way to include a user name and password in the SMTP SERVER (OUTGOING) field - Eudora only wants a single URL.
But I think I found the way that Eudora does allow something like this - via "SMTP Relay" using "Personalities" - described here:
http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2107hq.html
Does that look like it will work?
I'll give it a try shortly.

I finally got the chance to try Eudora's SMTP relay...........and no luck. I'm getting ready to tell Verizon to come disconnect my FIOS connection so I can go back to sending/receiving email without hassles on Time Warner Cable.
I'll be glad to accept any other ideas, otherwise it's going to be GOODBYE FIOS.

well I would set up a free gmail before I went back to time warner. that seems like an aweful lot of work and phone time for email. if you set up a free hotmail or yahoo or gmail email address it takes minutes, vs calling - cancelling, and then calling and setting up an appt, and then waiting around for them hook it up.
ya know?
it may be the port 587. so for example go daddy emails sometimes don't like 587 and they instead like port 80. you really have to check with your domain name provider or your office and see which port they like using for smtp if 25 is not allowed. every company should have an alternate port, and 587 is only a suggestion not a requirement.

It will setup a default personality for you. I just made it work fine. I had to disable the test on the initial install and defining the account. Then verify the authentication settings after the software is installed.
Are you attempting to use this while connected to a Verizon connection? I have heard reports of connections being blocked when attempting to use Verizon's servers from outside their network. In which case you may be required to use webmail.verizon.net. Just set the webmail to leave messages on server so they can be retrieved from home.
Installed Eudora7 to help.
It will use the same username for sending. The first time you use the account it will ask if you wish to save the password.
I set my user name as name@verizon.net NOT JUST USERNAME

Have you tried Thunderbird mail client. I like it much better than plain Windows Mail. I am running Office Outlook 2007 now.

Eudora can indeed work with verizon! Problem is: even the Verizon technical support dummies do not know how to set it up correctly! If you are using Eudora 7.1.0.9 (last version as far as I know), you need to do the following.
- go to the extrastuff folder under Eudora's main folder
- copy the "esteric.epi" file to the main Eudora folder
- now when you open Eudora, go to Tools, Options and slide down to Ports - now you have the ability to add ports!
My settings - which are NOT what Verizon tells you to do are:
incoming.verizon.net - using port: 110 (the default)
smtp.verizon.net - using port: 465
in other words, the "old" incoming settings work - the new one: pop.verizon.net with port 995 DOES NOT!
the "new" outgoing settings: smtp.verizon.net with port 465 work, the old one: outgoing.verizon.net with port 25 DOES NOT!
Wish Verizon figured this out! Would have saved me hours of trial and error and frustration!

A casual user, like myself. can't change the server ports in Eudora 7 to match the new Verizon criteria of 995 for POP3 server and 465 for SMTP server. There are two email client software programs that are similar to Eudora 7.1 and do have provision to change ports: Mozilla Thunderbird and Eudora OSE. You might get the Thunderbird instillation file to automatically pick up the right Verizon info and also be able to list and access email originally saved or stored by Eudora 7.1.
