I was completely unaware of any planned changes to the Verizon email servers when I was unable to send email from Eudora yesterday although from reading through the forum I discovered that supposedly there were emails sent and some sort of announcements made--I received no email notification(s) and could find no announcement (there is NO announcement section displayed in "My Verizon, I want to.." section). I could successfully send mail out via Thunderbird. After 5-6 hours of browsing around and trying this and that, I stumbled across the correct changes that needed to be made in Eudora and joined the forum so I could post the following which I hope will help other Eudora users.
Before I get into the details, I should note that I have a number of different email accounts (Personalities) established in Eudora and my primary Eudora account--the "Dominant" personality--is not my verizon account so keep that in mind when reading the following:
1. Eudora > Tools > Options:
A. Getting Started - existing account settings stay the same, change the following:
- SMPT Server (Outgoing): smpt.verizon.net
checkmark “Allow Authentication”
B. Checking Mail - existing account settings stay the same, change:
- Secure Sockets when Receiving: Required, Alternate Port
(was: “if available, starttls”)
(I would like to thank user "QRK" in thread
"Email Settings - ONCE AND FOR ALL" for this key piece of info on
what to choose in "Secure Sockets when Receiving"
C. Sending Mail - existing account settings stay the same, change:
- SMTP Server: smtp.verizon.net
checkmark: “Allow Authentication”
“Immediate Send”
"Send on Check”
- SMTP Relay Personality: Required to send mail from Eudora from other
non-verizon email accounts–the name of
Eudora verizon Personality (account)
selected from drop down menu
- Secure Sockets when Sending: Required, Alternate Port
(was: “if available, starttls”)
😧 Optional: With Eudora closed, check the Eudora installation folder for a
subfolder “extrastuff” for the file “esoteric.epi” copying the file
to the main Eudora installation folder. This will add a “Ports” option
near the bottom of the Tools > Options list which will allow the
specification of a number of different ports. This is not required
and specifying the new SMTP port (465) in the appropriate Ports
option field does not speed up the send/outgoing mail processing.
2. Eudora > Tools > Personalities (or click on the Personality tab):
A. “Dominant” Eudora Personality (email account) Properties:
- Generic Properties tab - existing account settings stay the same, change:
- SMTP Server: smtp.verizon.net;
checkmark: “Authentication Allowed”
“Use Relay Personality, if Defined”
do not checkmark: “Use Submission Port (587)”
- Secure Sockets when Sending: Required, Alternate Port
(was: “if available, starttls”)
- Incoming Mail tab - existing account settings stay the same, change:
- Secure Sockets when Receiving: Required, Alternate Port
(was: “if available, starttls”)
Note: Change any other non-verizon email account (Eudora Personality)
settings in the same way
B. Verizon email account Eudora Personality Properties:
- Generic Properties tab - This is the “Relay Personality”
selected from the dropdown menu in 1C (Sending Mail)
above and the verizon account settings stay the same, change:
- SMTP Server: smtp.verizon.net
checkmark: “Authentication Allowed”
“Use Relay Personality, if Defined”
do not checkmark: “Use Submission Port (587)”
- Secure Sockets when Sending: Required, Alternate Port
(was: “if available, starttls”)
- Incoming Mail tab - verizon account settings stay the same, change:
- Server: pop.verizon.net
- Secure Sockets when Receiving: Required, Alternate Port
(was: “if available, starttls”)
As I noted above, I had no problems--yesterday--sending mail using Thunderbird with the "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" using "Server Name" of "outgoing.verizon.net", "Port" 587, "Connection Security" of "None", "Authentication Method" of "Password Transmitted Insecurely".
Today however, thoseThunderbird settings didn't work so I changed the "Server Name" to smtp.verizon.net, "Port" to 465, "Connection Security" to SSL/TLS and "Authentication Method" to Normal Password and my emails were successfully sent.
Hope the above proves useful...

I as well use Eudora and cannot get ANY email as of today. I have tried all the settings outlined in this thread and no luck. Eudora stalls at the Connectin To mail Server step. I ever tried backing up my eudora.ini, deleting it, and starting fresh. No luck. Anyone know what I can do to get email back?

I am receiving incoming mail using mail.verizon.net instead of the pop.verizon.net that was mentioned in some of the above messages. If that does not work for you, then either use the online chat (expect a 30 min wait) or call their 800 type number (probably similar wait).

Follwo Up: I downloaded Thunderbird (god I ahte that program) and can use mail just fine with the settings that it auto configured as outlined below:
incomeing.verizon.net - 995
SSL/TLS
Encrypted Password
outgoing.verizon.net - 465
Normal Password
SSL/TLS
I went into Eudora and set the servers to match theer and now instead of locking at Connecting To Server it locks at Logging Into POP Server.

I'm glad it's working for you now.
I was going to say that I wondered if the problems you were having with Eudora after changing back to the "old" server names was that you kept the "new" security settings (ssl/tls and required, alternate port) but I guess that's wasn't the issue...

OK so I spoke too soon. It is ALMOST working right. I can fetch andd send form my verizon accounts BUT my accounts at other POPs can only send and NOT fetch. I am webmaster or several web sites and have webmaster@ accounts for them. I am gettign no incoming mail form them. I know mail is in the inbox from logging into the web mail though.

Well in another case of "I went ahead and tried one more thing after posting" I got this totally resolved...
Settigns as follows:
TOOLS - OPTIONS
GETTING STARTED
Mail Server Incoming: incoming.verizon.net
SMTP Server: smtp.verizion.net
CHECKING MAIL
Mail Server: incoming.verizon.net
Secure sockets When Receiving: Required, Alternate Port
INCOMING MAIL:
Server Configuration: POP
Authentication Type: Passwords
PERSONALITIES
DOMINANT
GENERIC
SMTP Server: smtp.verizion.net
Authentication Allowed: Checked
Secure Sockets When Sending: Required, Alternate Port
INCOMING
Server: incoming.verizon.net
Authentication Type: Passwords
Secure Sockets When Receiving: Required, Alternate Port
OTHER VERIZON PERSONA
Same as above
NON VERIZON PERSONA
GENERIC
SMTP Server: smtp.verizion.net
Authentication Allowed: Checked
Secure Sockets When Sending: Required, Alternate Port
INCOMING
Server: mail.domain.com (use the actual incoming mail server from the domain for that email account)
Authentication Type: Passwords
Secure Sockets When Receiving: Required, Alternate Port
That all being said you MIGHT need to add lines to Eudora.ini (This link may be very helpful http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/ini.html). I have these two parameters set.
SMTPPort=465
POPPort=995
They MAY not be needed but it does work with them.

Do you have a Relay Personality chosen/defined in Eudora?
I could not send mail out via my non-verizon email accounts without choosing/defining the Relay Personality which is my Verizon email account. If you have not chosen/defined a Relay Personality and mail sent via non-verizon email accounts is successfully sent, my guess is it's because your Eudora Dominant personality is your Verizon email account--my Eudora Dominant personality is a non-verizon email account.
To establish the The Relay Personality:
1. Go to Tools > Options > Sending Mail > SMTP Relay Personality and choose the email account you want to use as the Relay Personality from the dropdown menu which lists all the Eudora Personalities defined via Tools > Personality (or by clicking on the Personality tab).
2. Then for each personality (even the personality chosen as the Relay Personality) in Personality > Properties > Generic Properties tab > SMTP Server section, checkmark "Use Relay Personality, if defined"
>>ImNotDave: That all being said you MIGHT need to add lines to Eudora.ini (This link may be very helpful http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/ini.html). I have these two parameters set. SMTPPort=465
POPPort=995
An alternative to editing the Eudora.ini file is to do the following:
With Eudora closed, check in the Eudora installation folder for a subfolder “extrastuff” for the file “esoteric.epi” copying "esoteric.epi" to the main Eudora installation folder. The next time you open Eudora, check Tools > Options, scrolling down and you will see the added “Ports” option (near the bottom of the Tools > Options list) which will allow the specification of a number of different ports--I have not found this to be required and specifying the new SMTP port (465) in the appropriate Ports option field does not speed up the send/outgoing mail processing.

Yes I have relay checked and always have.
The .cpi did not work for me to add those fields. It does not do that in all versions of Eudora hence the link I gave for all of the available ini entries in Eudora.

Ahhh...interesting--it's ".Epi" by the way. I'm using Eudora 7.1.0.9--last version I think. Which version are you using? If I make the recommendation about copying esoteric.epi in the future, I'll add a note about it not working in all versions.

Thanks. This does work, but you have to be patient. Once you re-open Eudora, it will take about a half hour before Eudora is able to negotiate new settings for incoming and actually receive email. Then it will be OK. And the first time you send, expect it to take about a half hour to negotiate the new sendings as well.

I seem to have spoken too soon in my earlier reply. I was still waiting for it to do a Send. Unfortunately it will not send email with these settings.
Furthermore, Eudora keeps stalling and crashing with these settings.

The error message is something like Error reading from network. Sorry about the difficulty on being precise, but the task error message disappears almost immediately after you view it.

Error message popped up again. What I wrote is exactly what the error message is.
Unfortunately Eudora is almost unusable with these settings. Because of its inability to multitask, it just gets stuck on trying to Send when it can't.

The problem with Sending seems to be that the change from "if available, starttls" to "Required, Alternate Port" will not stick in the settings. Eudora reverts it back, and this seems to be a required setting for it to work. If anyone can figure out how to get Eudora to permanently accept the changed setting, please write.

I've not had any problem with "Required, Alternate Port" sticking.
Some stuff to check:
1. Did you choose "Required, Alternate Port" in in Tools > Options, "Getting Started", "Checking Mail" and "Sending Mail" suboptions and in "Incoming Mail" set "Authentication Style" to "Passwords"--along with changing the incoming and outgoing server names?
2. In Tools > Personalities (or by selecting a personality via the Personality tab) did you choose "Required, Alternate Port" in both the "Generic Properties" tab and the "Incoming Mail" tab and and on the "Generic Properties" tab did you UNcheck "Use Submission Port (587)" for each Personality and on the "Incoming Mail" tab did you set "Authentication Style" to "Password"?
Hope that helps...

I finally got it to stick.
The problem with Eudora is that it is very difficult to negotiate the new protocols. Each time you open Eudora, it tries and tries and tries. It may take 30 minutes. It may take an hour. You may have to close it (and you have to use Task Manager to do this because it won't close normally while it is trying to negotiate with the server) and open it again. It's not that it won't work at all, but it works so poorly that it is extremely frustrating.
The way Verizon is doing it does not work well at all. Do you think there is any chance we can get them to revise it to a protocol where server negotiation is not so excruciatingly difficult?

Do you know whether they're using TCP/IPv6? I find in Network Connections that is not working.

Yes, all those are set up as you indicate.
I got it working yesterday, but today it will not connect at all.

1) revert - back is redundant! 🙂 Revert neabs to go back!
Anyway, the settinsg do not revrt for me or anyone else I know who is using Eudora. Something goofy is going on on your end.
