What settings are you using for SMTP and POP connections?
The usual correct ones are
smtp.verizon.net port 465 SSL
pop.verzizon.net port 995 SSL
or for Yahoo users
incoming.yahoo.verizon.net and outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net

What servers and ports are you using. For non-Yahoo users its
smtp.verizon.net port 465 SSL
pop.verzizon.net port 995 SSL

Not sure how you get the message now that they are switching people to AOL interface.
The message use to come out if you had not switched the ports to the ones that require ssl/tls.
smtp.verizon.net port 465 SSL
pop.verzizon.net port 995 SSL
