Inbox emails being deleted

Earlier this evening I had 17 emails in my inbox; later when I accessed my inbox I only had 3 messages, including one new arrival. Why are they being deleted other than by me? Can I retrieve them?I can understand deleted emails being automatically completely deleted after a given period of time, but why are my inbox emails being deleted when I only had a limited number of them.
