1) when I have been on email for a while, and try to download the Calendar to make an entry, the system makes an attempt to download for several minutes, and then finally will time-out. i have to log back in, and then enter calendar to make entries.
2) aside from the Calendar issue, the Email will on its own time-out constantly. I have read where it automatically will time out in the event of 20 minutes of inactivity. but mine seems to do this well short of that.

There are auto timeouts on the Verizon.com site. This is to help protect the account. If you find yourself needing more time, you can always configure an email client (which has built in calendar) as an alternative.
