I was going to change over to the AOL email, but I don't want to give up my cell number. It's bad enough I get 2 calls a day from spoofed telemarketer numbers, though I'm on the Do Not Call list.

Put simply you don't. They think most people would want to give it as a number to notify about problems with your email, including recovering passwords.
