I have been using Windows Live Mail on my Dell Inspiron for almost 2 years. No problems at all.
Today, I tried to log in and got "unable to send or receive messages for the Verizon account. Connection to server has failed.'
pop.verizon.net
Windows Live Mail Error ID 0X800CCC0E
Protocol POP3
Port 995
Secure authorization required (SSL): Y
Socket error 10060
Everything else working fine. I can check my email through Verizon site, but prefer to use the program.
I have two email IDs and passwords. This is happening with both of them.
How do I fix it?

I had the same problem this morning. After restarting my computer WLM worked with VZ mail. May not be the same cause of your problem, but give it a try.

before doing anything check this out first, it may be the simple answer you need http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windowslive/forum/livemail-program/windows-live-mail-is-stuck-in-...
if that doesn't fix it for you then follow these other steps
First thing is first, and please don't skip this step thinking that it is irrelevant.
1. Go to webmail.verizon.net and try to login with your username and password. If you can sign in great go to the next step. If you cannot sign in then you need to reset/change your password by hitting the forgot password button.
2. Once you know you have the correct username and password then you go back to windows live mail and go into your account settings (here is a guide of how to get there http://digitalunite.com/guides/email/how-use-windows-live-mail)
3. Once in settings you can find where to type in your password. if you just changed your password online then you will need to change it here in the account settings. Also you may want to verify that all other settings are correct (sounds like you already had the settings correct before so you may not have to change anything)
incoming server: pop.verizon.net which is on port 995 using SSL
Outgoing server: smtp.verizon.net which is on port 465 using SSL
if all settings are correct and you are still having problems then you need to call Microsoft. Although they are likely to charge you since Windows Live Mail is a free program.

Thanks for the responses.
I DID restart computer and still got error.
I WAS able to log into verizon.net and read emails.
Shut computer off.
Later on, I turned it back on and everything is fine.
Some glitch I guess.

I had the same problem. I was able to send email, but was not able to receive.
I did call Verizon at the time this was happening, and spoke to a tech. He said that they were having some server problems and that it had nothing to do with my settings.. The problem apparently was fixed, and all is fine now.
