What Verizon email program?
Most people use one like Microsoft outlook/outlook expess, Microsoft Live Mail, Mozilla Thunderbired, etc. You are not locked in to any email program.

i don't have any of those kind of programs [i.e.] Microsoft outlook/outlook expess, Microsoft Live Mail, Mozilla Thunderbired, etc.
outlook is not on my computer. i know nothing about how all this works ... i know only that i have been using the verizon program to compose and receive email for several years now with microsoft vista operating system. my neighbor has verizon with outlook somehow attached. his verizon has a tools icon [gear image] in the upper right corner. my version does not have that icon so i wonder if i need some kind of update to get to the tools menu for instance? is it possible verizon has attached me to an email program which functions transparent to me, and if so how can i tell?
thanks a lot for the help, much appreciated. couldn't find any phone or chat contacts for verizon help on this. do you know of any?

Heard vaguely that one of the Verizon programs has email, but not sure what one. Whichever one you use is probably not very good.
I USE NO VERIZON PROGRAMS on my machines, some are notoriously buggy. Try one of the ones I mentioned such as the FREE ones like Microsoft Live mail or Mozilla Thunderbird.

Those are on how to move to GMAIL. Possibly useful, but is not about email programs that can be used with Verizon.
I big list is at

After signing in to your acct.
Do you see at top MY Verizon?
Hover over it then choose Check my Mail
It will take you to
Conversations Contacts Calendars Settings(<< click on it)
Go down left hand side to Email Settings(<<click on it)
On next screen under Options Forwarding(<<click on it)
You should be on the screen that I sent to you before.

Mail app for Windows
Set up Mail and add contacts
See email from Outlook.com, Gmail, Yahoo! and other accounts
To see email from different accounts in the Mail app, you need to add them.
- On Start, tap or click Mail.
- Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then clickSettings.) - Tap or click Accounts.
- 4. Tap or click Add an account, choose the type of account you want to add, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF BELOW VERIZON USES POP 3:
The Mail app doesn't support email accounts that use POP (Post Office Protocol). To get these accounts in Mail, see Using email accounts over POP on Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1.
Add contacts
The Mail and People apps work together, so if you added an Outlook.com or Exchange account, your contacts are automatically added to the People app. For all other accounts, you need to add the same accounts to the People app to get your contacts, just like you did in the Mail app. See how to do that in the "Add or import contacts" section of People app help
