e-mail taking 5 mnts plus to Send

Since changing to the new SSL requirements, my Mail app under OS X 10.5.8 is taking 5 minutes or more, just to Send an e-mail.

What gives?

when I changed my Mail.app settings to "Use custom port 465" for my Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) Edit Server List items, it seemed to correct the problem.
