outlook 2002 setup with verizon.net email

I am trying to set up Outlook 2002 for my Verizon.net email.  I set up incoming.verizon.net and outgoing.verizon.net, enter my username and password, which are correct, and I see it connect both incoming and outgoing correctly, but then it says my username or password are incorrect and it doesn't retrieve or send.  What is the problem?  When I change the port numbers to the numbers they specify, same thing happens, says my username or password is incorrect.

Hello,

Are you able to sign in successfully on webmail.verizon.net?

Here is a link on how to set up your email. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Yes, I followed those directions.  It still doesn't work, that is why I posted here.  Am able to sign in on webmail.verizon.net, but setting up Outlook is a problem.  Any other ideas?

This doesn't help at all, it is still the basic instructions, telling me to check and make sure my settings are correct.   I don't need instructions that tell me how to set up my account in Outlook, my settings are correct per Verizon's instructions on the link above and on their website.  Their trouble shooter just asks the same questions, "are you connected to the internet, do you have the correct settings?" My question is, is there a problem with Verizon and Outlook 2002?  My settings are set to what Verizon says, and when I do a test email, it shows it connecting, but then says there is a username or password error or other connection problem.

I had the same problems...and had to do a lot of experimenting. Finally got it to work. On the "Internet e-mail settings (POP3)" page,"logon information" at the lower left hand corner, instead of user name and password on the email account,  I tried my email address (i.e firstname.lastname@verizon.net) along with the new password and for some reason it worked. First time since December 16, 2011 (2 months) I have been able to get email with outlook 2002. I was about to cancel and go to comcast.
