The screen of the portable phones say "check phone line" and there is no dial tone.

Have you checked to make sure your cordless base station is plugged into the phone jack? If the phone cord came loose or was unplugged, that will cause your phone to not work and to display the "check phone line" message.
If the cord is properly installed but still no dial-tone, plug in another phone. Preferably a known, good corded phone. If that still doens't work, find the network interface device and open it up. It is usually installed on an outside wall. Unplug the cord that feeds the house and plug in a known, good corded phone. If you have dial-tone the problem is inside your home. If you don't have dial tone the problem is in Verizon's wires. This web page may help you:
