International Roaming Question

I'm traveling overseas for the first time and noticed today that instead of the comforting airplane sign my phone was on roaming. Because I'm out of the states I don't know how to contact Verizon to see just how long it was left on and if there's anyway they could wave the mishap. What should I do?
