Military account suspension

My son is on my Verizon account and is being deployed on a carrier for a year.  I know we can suspend his account with no penalty.  What I haven't been able to find out is what happens when someone tries to call him when his phone is suspended.  What sort of message do they get?  Is there anyway to have his calls forwarded to another number?

I don't know what message callers will hear for a suspended line - "This number is currently not in service" perhaps?

The line would have to be active (not suspended) in order for call forwarding to work,as far as I know.
