It depends on when Microsoft RTM's Update 3 (GRD3) and depending on when the OEMs release Update 3 to VZW.
For example Nokia is also including a firmware update (Black) with Update 3 so VZW has to wait for that and then test. This will probably happen until after Nokia's new devices are out in the market before the older devices get the update.

You can update your phone with GDR3 over the air anytime you want though. It voids your warrantee but I have it on my phone and it works great. When Verizon releases its version with device specific firmware it will update on your phone like normal.

Thanks primortal for the information, but you should let others know that if you do this, it will VOID your warranty with Verizon and may also void your insurance as well. Should anything happen to your phone, you're screwed. Personally, that's too big a gamble not to be patient. Having said that, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE VERIZON, DON'T DRAG YOUR FEET ON THIS UPDATE LIKE YOU DID WITH THE ANDROID UPDATES!

rmp1984 did state it would void warranty and such so I didn't cover it in my post
We'd have to wait for MS to RTM Update 3 and for Nokia (and everyone else) to release the update to VZW. Hopefully Nokia will do what they did for GDR2 and update their status page, http://www.nokia.com/global/support/software-update/wp8-software-update/availability-in-north-americ...

UPDATE: A friend of mine recently uplocked and upgraded his Lumia 928 to GDR3 from Microsoft. I advised him to put the phone in a protective case since the warranty will most likely now be void. Other than that, he is not having ANY problems with his phone. GDR3 was a HUGE improvement to his phone. It seems to run faster than mine, smoother and after almost 2 weeks of using his phone, he has not had so much as a hick-up! The battery actually seems to last a bit longer than mine now as well. Not sure what MS did, but it's working. I'm extremely tempted to do my phone now as well, but I'm going to give Nokia and Verizon a bit more time. If the update isn't available by mid-January, I'm voiding my warranty! PLEASE VERIZON, push Nokia and get this update out FAST!

UPDATE: Microsoft has recently released an update to the GDR3 developer release and this latest update makes the Lumia 928 work better than ever! Smoother, faster, more responsive screen, volume controls work better, battery drain problem fixed, etc. Pretty much the phone works better than an iPhone now! Verizon - STOP DELAYING THIS UPDATE! GET THIS OUT TO US AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND YOU WON'T HAVE PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THESE PHONES ANYMORE!

Nokia Lumia 928 and he states it works PERFECTLY! Also, he just received another update from Microsoft with an update to GDR3 and his 928 is working better, faster, smoother and is actually working better than my sister's iPhone 5S. I'm really staring to consider unlocking and updating my Lumia 928 if Verizon doesn't get this update out soon!

Hopefully it will fix the texting issue we've had to suffer through since GDR2 was released.

Sprint is already releasing the GDR3 update to its HTC 8XT.
If Verizon drags their feet on the Windows Phone updates like they did for the Android Samsung Galaxy Nexus updates, this will be my ABSOLUTE LAST contract renewal with Verizon! AT&T's towers are getting much better, especially in the New Orleans area, so Verizon won't be able to cling to that old "we've got the best network" choke-hold much longer. AT&T's 4G LTE may not be as wide-spread, but as my friends who have AT&T have recently proven to me, AT&T's 4G LTE is almost twice as fast as my Verizon 4G LTE in the New Orleans area. My download speed on Verizon 4G LTE is about 10-15 mpbs while the download speeds for my AT&T friends are around 19-32 mpbs. Granted, AT&T probably doesn't have as many people using their network, but if Verizon knows they have more people, they should increase the bandwidth or towers on their network to accommodate the traffic.
Verizon will have to learn that customer satisfaction on their devices is just as important as the customer satisfaction of their network. In my opinion, BOTH seem to be going downhill, at least here in the New Orleans area.

I have to agree that their device selection and network performance have both been pretty disappointing of late. This is the main reason I have not upgraded any of my lines, except for the 2 iPhone 5 upgrades my wife and daughter begged for, in over a year. I just have not seen anything I wanted to spend the money on.
The couple of times I did get interested in a possible new device, Verizon waits forever and then releases some gimped version of the device. The latest episode with the Nokia 1520 is a perfect example of this.
But the thing that has bothered me the most is the corporate equivalent to a pathological need to avoid telling their customers anything about new devices and their inability to release software updates in a timely fashion.
In short, I just do not trust them anymore to provide up to date devices and reliable service.

Hopefully it fixes all the SMS issues that have happened since GDR2 for those of us with the 8X HTC units.

AT&T dragged their feet big time on the GDR2 update. Verizon put it out way before AT&T did. And Sprint dragged their feet on WP8 altogether. If you're looking for support for WP8, I don't think you will find any better major carrier than Verizon.

Is GDR 3 the same as windows phone version 8.0.10501.127 or 8.0.10512.142? I just got an email from Nokia saying that this would let us customize text notification tones. No more Tinkerbell for everyone in the phone book. But my phone is still on 8.0.103... How can verizon say it is waiting for Nokia if Nokia is telling us that we can now bag old Tink?
Any idea, anyone, when the Tinkletones are eradicable?

Update 3 (GRD3) is version 8.0.10512.142.
I haven't heard that Nokia release Black+Update 3 yet. Even their own site about software updates still lists Amber. So we're going to have to wait.

Nokia Black is Nokia's software for the phone. GDR3 is Microsoft's update to the operating system. There is NO reason Verizon couldn't release Microsoft's OS update and push Nokia's Black Firmware update later on. People are having issues with GDR2 and from what I've witnessed from friends who have upgraded via developer update (and chose to void their warranty) and from what I've read online, GDR3 will fix 95% of the issues people are having with GDR2. Verizon should push the Microsoft GDR3 update to our phones and then they can push the firmware update whenever Nokia releases it.
