Lumia Cyan with Windows Phone 8.1 roll-out starts today (7/15/2015)

Microsoft has started rolling out Lumia Cyan with Windows Phone 8.1 to Lumia devices. With Windows Phone 8.1, Lumia Cyan owners will get several new features, including a third column in the launcher, Wi-Fi Sense, the new Notification and Action center, and — perhaps most importantly — Cortana.

On the Lumia-specific front, Lumia Cyan brings an updated camera experience with a newly simplified Nokia Camera interface "with one-tap access to edit and share" your photos. Creative Studio 6 is bringing new filters and image enhancement tools, but it's yet available from the Windows Phone Store.

The new Device Hub in Cyan makes it easier to track your connected accessories. By combining awareness of which devices are connected, when they're connected, and where they're connected (and when and where they loose that connection), Device Hub can tell you exactly where you last left that gadget. It will also offer app recommendations for use with said accessories.

Owners of the Nokia Lumia Icon and Nokia Lumia 1520 will see additional enhancements from Lumia Cyan. Already powerhouses when it comes to camera recording, the two phones are also getting enhanced audio recording with Nokia Rich Recording and Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 sound. Screen Share will be integrated with the two smartphones, so you can, well, share your screen. And the SensorCore SDK Beta will also be integrated, bringing additional motion and location data to apps and accessories.

Lumia Cyan is rolling out starting today around the world, though it may not be immediately available for your device. Microsoft states that it will be "available for all Windows Phone 8 Lumia devices in the coming weeks."

That is called Anti-Competitive practices, aka. Monopolizing the industry.

This is not allowed. If they (VZW and Apple/Google) are found to be doing this, they can be sued.

It really depends on just how many are affected and actually care.

If it's only a few hundred, forget it, we are out of luck. Although that shouldn't matter.

Apple can not incentivize any company to do anything against another company.

This is what Microsoft got in so much trouble for in the past, and in some areas, today, albeit, unfounded.

The update will most likely come, just not as soon as it should.

If the update is never pushed out, yes, this can be seen as an anti-competitive issue.

However, they would argue that if you don't like it, there are other carriers you can go to.

The only way it would be seen otherwise, is if they were doing it with other company phones (iPhone.Blackberry,Android, etc.) as well, not just WP.

Actually, the update did not include Cyan.  I downloaded and installed the update and I did not get Cyan.  That must come from VZN, not MSFT.

Microsoft can update the OS (Windows Phone 8.0 to Windows Phone 8.1), but the firmware must go through Verizon testing before it can be released.  The firmware is separate from the OS.  Even Apple's firmware must be tested on Verizon before it can be released, its just that Apple secretly tests the firmware with Verizon before even making the announcement that the iOS updates are available making it seem like there is no wait, but there actually is.  According to Microsoft Mobile OY website, they have already delivered the OS and Cyan firmware to Verizon and they should be testing it now.  If there is a delay, at least now we know on whom to place blame, so PLEASE!!!!!  DON'T DELAY THIS UPDATE VERIZON!!!!  I want my Miracast apability and my Dolby Digital Surround Sound recording for my videos!

Well given that we know that Microsoft released the updates to all the carriers at the same time, let's hope that Verizon is willing to show the same dedication as AT&T did to their flagship Windows Phone and get this update out to us swiftly.

Saw the rumor about AT&T releasing the update to some phones this week.  Considering how the Icon is just the Verizon version of the 930, it would be nice if they at least release the Cyan update for us Icon owners.

I really hope we don't have to wait as long for Cyan as we did for GDR3.

Only VZW knows

When Update 3 (GRD3) was released it was from newer model to oldest.  So the Icon should get the update first then 928 and lastly the 822.  They did stagger each release a week apart.

OK, Verizon. I've been with you for years and expected MUCH better. I waited and bought the Nokia Icon *after* the 8.1 Update *and* the Cyan update were both officially released. I bought the HTC 8X before because I liked the size and form factor and HTC quality. I bought the Nokia this time because it's the flagship Windows Phone model, made by Nokia which is now owned by Microsoft, and yet, here we are, approx. 4 months from the announcement of 8.1 and release to developers, more than a month after being made generally available, and yet *STILL* not available on my brand new Microsoft/Nokia Icon! Yet, just yesterday, to add insult to injury, if I had just waited, I could have an HTC One M8 with 8.1 ALREADY LOADED! How does that logic work? Microsoft you *OWN* Nokia and WROTE the OS and could CLEARLY have helped Verizon test out the new firmware and OS release on your OWN phone, yet, instead, you've partnered with HTC to use an already existing model, catered to their special hardware requirements vs. your own, and have now placed a competitors product in direct competition (oh wait, make that a STEP AHEAD in competition) with your own flagship device. I bought a Google Nexus 7 to be on the latest version of android and have not been disappointed with that choice as they support THEIR OWN devices *VERY* well with timely releases. That's definitely NOT the case with my Nokia Icon and the complete lack of LEADING support for it. And, of course, it's past my window of time to return the device and, if I DO try the the developer version, I'll have to jump through hoops in reverse just to get it back on a supported firmware so that I won't brick my phone trying to apply the Cyan update and final release of 8.1. How in the world does this make sense? You're doing more damage to your current user base than you are expanding it (which I assume is the aim of partnering with HTC to offer more options on the market) with this move.

Get the testing done and get it released ASAP! Or, at the very least, release both the Cyan firmware *and* what is intended to be the final released version the same way you did the developer preview.

Unfortunately, Microsoft is not to blame here.  Microsoft sent ALL carriers the Cyan firmware update on July 15th for testing.  Microsoft has applied to have their firmware "pre-tested" with Verizon the way Apple does, but Verizon said "no."  Microsoft does not have the sales pull that Apple does, so they cannot "strong-arm" Verizon into the same pre-testing option.  However, we do.  We, as paying customers, can demand the same equal treatment for our dollars that Apple users receive.  We can file a complaint with the FCC stating such discrimination.  I have and have already received a call back from Verizon on the issue.  Join the fight.  Go to http://www.fcc.gov/complaint and file your complaint.  If we all band together, we can force Verizon to allow Microsoft the same treatment that Apple gets.

Approval for 8.1 and approval for Cyan wouldn’t be the same. Cyan would need additional testing since it includes additional firmware.

The version of 8.1 found in the HTC One should be the same version you can get now using the dev preview program.

I have been using the Preview for Developers edition Windows Phone 8.1 beta for several months on my Nokia Lumia 928 with absolutely no problems.  Come on Verizon, I'm upgrading to an Icon in a few days and would like to have Windows Phone 8.1 stock on it.  There is no reason for a holdup on this.  You are just getting your customers upset.

I would highly encourage anyone that is frustrated/dissatisfied to file an FCC complaint regarding Verizon's poor policies and communication relating to Windows Phone updates (specifically Lumia Cyan, WP 8.1)

I filed a FCC complaint about a week ago for no update and poor/miscommunication for when WP8.1 (Lymia Cyan) will be rolled out for my Lumia Icon.  I received a call today from a Verizon representative explaining that at the highest level, they still do not know when the update will be rolled out.  I told him that I am not the only one, and he perused the forums/blogs for a few minutes and immediately agreed there is a problem.  The outcome is this representative will be writing suggestions to the Verizon executives to change policies and procedures relating to updates and communication of updates.

Let your voices be heard through an escalation path that will get their attention.  Verizon is on the pace for being last in the world to roll these updates out, and there is no reason for it.  It is unfair for their paying customers, unfair for phone manufacturers making Windows Phone devices (Samsung, HTC, Nokia, etc.), and also unfair to Microsoft in their attempt at rolling out more impactful and frequent updates to their Windows Phone line.  Rolling out big updates more frequently means nothing if Verizon, one of the world's largest cell phone carriers, does not do anything to properly communicate timelines of updates, and is extremely slow to roll them out.

It won't be long before WP 8.1 Update 1 is officially released by Microsoft, how long will it take for Verizon to roll that out?  Important features and enhancements are included in these updates that make WP devices more functional and competitive, yet Verizon sits and does nothing.

We as Verizon customers do not have a choice to switch carriers or phones, as we are essentially purchasing $500+ devices subsidized over 2 year contracts (and paying upfront in many cases as well).

I have a 2 year old Nokia 822 gray color WP.  I have tried the Developer Preview of Windows Phone 8.1 and it is HORRIBLE! At first I was ****** that Verizon did not release this update in a timely manner.  I actually posted and complained about it on here.  Then I went, signed up as a developer and downloaded the Preview for Developer app.  At first I was in awe of Cortana she was cool and would do what I had asked or requested.  The longer I worked with the update issues began to develop.  This update is MAD glitchy.  The new blue screen of death is now called "resuming."  If you have two or more apps running at one, mostly the Xbox music app.  If you are on one app and go back to the music app you get this "resuming" screen for several seconds before you return to the music app.  This is annoying and not fluid at all.  The apps I heavily use are Xbox Music ( I have the Xbox music subscription) and Waze and Here Drive.  Common scenario driving with navigation on and listening to music.  If I go from Music to Navigation or vice versa I get the "resuming" screen for a second or two. Also if there is a song from Xbox music that the app can not find the DRM for ( I don't know why since I get all my music from Xbox music and I have had a music subscription since my Zune) the music app stops playing.  Literally shuts down and stops playing, ***?!  I now agree with Verizon, don't release the update it is crap.  Wait and make sure MS fixes the bugs first.

I'm sorry to hear WP 8.1 isn't working well on your 822.  Since Verizon is the only carrier with the 822, you can't say another carrier has already rolled it out and it runs fine.  I ran 8.1 Preview for Developers on my 928 and ICON, and they both ran flawlessly.  Just a thought, but are you sure you're running the latest version of 8.1 Preview for Developers?  Another thought, have you tried a factory reset of the phone and trying again?

I think it's important to point out that even with your poor experience with your 822, these updates can and are released by unique phone model.  Releasing Cyan (8.1) for the 928 and ICON based on my experience and many others should not be a problem, unless there is something that Verizon caught during their testing.  If so, they have done a terrible job of communicating ANYTHING to their customers about it.  I find it hard to believe they are holding back due to testing issues being that so many other variants across so many other carriers have released it and there have not been any widespread reported issues.

People are complaining on AT&T forums and different forums about problems with the update.   I also had trouble when beta testing the M8(WP), I also tried 8.1 on 1520 before and after and I had trouble with it.  Yes people have tried and do what you suggested and I had my 1520 replaced once.

I know it comes with the territory, and done that here and there.  OVer all I like Windows Phone, but sorry I don't drink the koolaid that Nokia is finished with their update and Verizon passed it and is ready to be pushed out.  Nokia isn't very transparent to begin with(Even when they were developing Symbian.  I loved that OS).  I see more transparent companies pushing out updates no problem on Verizon.  Even to say they are delaying it to pad sales...  Verizon would have done that with other devices that recently got updated as well on Verizon.

FYI HTC is about to release a device and they could have delayed the M7 updates to push the sales of the new M8 and the new HTC device about to be announced....  Yet Verizon didn't and HTC was able to push out the update...  Kind of put holes in that theory that Verizon withholding the update for sales.
