My phone stopped working a couple weeks ago. everytime i opened it to text someone the entire phone would shut off. then it would just randomly decide to shut off i my pocket. now i can hear the phone when i turn it on and off, and the keyboard lights still work, but the screen is completely blank. i can still receive texts and probably calls too. what's my best option?

What phone do you have? Some of the behavior you describe sounds like it might be a loose battery connection. A simple fix for this is to add a piece of folded index card or folded paper at the opposite end of the battery from the connection, forcing a tighter fit and better contact. This worked for my daughter's old LG Env3 when it started randomly shutting down on her.
How old is the phone? It may just be wearing out?
