You can run the preview right now.

Preview for Developers | Windows Phone Apps+Games Store (United States)

You need an App Studio account, but it's free to sign up and takes about a minute.

Windows App Studio - Microsoft

There is no firm release dates for the official Cyan firmware update and the official release of WP8.1.

If I upgrade using the developer preview, will I loose any features that I am currently utilizing now? Also can I upgrade to the final cyan update from the windows developer preview.

Lots of other carriers have been releasing Windows Phone 8.1.  For example, the Lumia 1020 on AT&T just got the update today.  When will Verizon release 8.1 for the icon?

Verizon is a joke.  Time to drop these butt-clowns and go to ATT.  The fact that they cannot even communicate an estimated range of dates for the 8.1 update is pathetic.

Way to go Verizon, bunch of New Jersey mafiosos.

Nearly ever other phone around the world has Windows Phone 8.1 and Cyan update.  I want my Lumia Icon updated ASAP please!  I am paying top dollar to a top tier carrier.  I expect top tier service.

Can you hear us now?  Verizon doesn't hear us, they don't care about us.  Once they have you locked into a contract, you're on your own.  Luckily other carriers are offering buy outs.  So I would either switch carriers or try the developer preview.  Luckily Microsoft gives us that option so we don't have to wait for dumb carriers who don't care about their customers.

I bought my Icon just a few days over 2 months ago expecting it to ship with 8.1.  I can not communicate how disappointed I am in VZ for NOT sending the 8.1 update out.  I have used Apple and Android, each have their own following but to do this to paying customers is not right.  I work for a software company that relys heavily on Microsoft products and we would NEVER do this to a customer.  If it was not for the fact that I had terrible coverage from AT&T I would look at switching to another carrier but VZ is about the only reliable one where I live.

But this latest trick is more than disheartening, it should approach being illegal.  And I had the same experience when asking about the Icon in a VZ store before buying it.  The salesperson didn't want to talk Windows Phone anything and kept pushing Galaxy and iPhone.  That is why I ordered mine online, because of their sales rep.

Not a good move VZ to keep customers happy!

Maybe you should have taken that customer services rep advice and you would not be complaining now. Pont to ponder!

Sayeth Elector, the Verizon shill.

Honestly, Elector, how much do they pay you per post? All I ever see you do is post snide comments when people have any issue or gripe with Verizon. You do know that they are completely free to do so, right? And yes, you are free to be snotty to them for doing so, I just don't understand it unless you are being paid.

If Verizon isn't paying you for your work here, then I truly feel sorry for you. To spend so much time defending a corporation, I mean why?

Now that that's out of the way, honestly, Verizon, please release Cyan/8.1 soon! Thanks!

Have you read all his posts? Or just specific ones?

Often depending on the situation he is often against the big bad red company... We've had disagreements more than once about certain things in various other threads.

Well since you evidently did not read my reply to the poster it is you that has the problem.

The rep tried to steer him away from the device. If he listened he would not have the issue he has now.

So in hindsight the Verizon rep at the store was actually trying to get him to change his selection.

He/she bought it anyway via online and now because its not going to be going anywhere any longer the big bad cell company is to blame.

I note plently of you windows phone people resort to "shill" or "troll" or "I am employed by Verizon" because you have no facts to back up your cases.

Again I am my own person with my own opinions. If you don't like them just don't read them.

It really is that simple.

At it again huh Elector....

You quickly jump on the fact that the customer should have listened to the rep and "purchased a different device."  Yet you fail to realize that the customer came into the store with the specific intent to purchase the Windows Phone.  The ONLY reason this phone doesn't have Cyan with Windows Phone 8.1 is because Verizon has not yet approved it.  Otherwise this phone would have a much higher sales appeal given the recent developments with "Bendgate" and the specifications included in this device.  The manufacturer CANNOT (under contract) release the Cyan update until Verizon approves it first!

Now, the reason that was provided by Verizon support for the retiring the Icon is because of "lack of sales".  Well, DUH!   How can Verizon expect to increase sales of a device when the sales reps are actively trying to get customers to purchase another device.  And now here you are defending that action.

Even if these actions aren't an intentional attempt by Verizon to crush Windows Phone, the ultimate outcome is just that.  How can ANYONE, even you, support such practices?  If you think what the Verizon rep did was OK, then that really says a LOT about what kind of person you are.

If you went to a car dealer and you wanted a Honda accord, but the salesman says that model of car has loads of issues and says the Honda Civic is a solid well selling vehicle with zero issues and you say no (which is your right) I still want the Accord and you buy the accord. Then a few months later you are getting loads of problems, and then you sit and say how you wished you now purchased the other model.

Who's fault is that? The dealer tried to warn you. Maybe the salesman knew something you didn't like it was going to be not sold any longer. Just like that windows device.

Now you go to the forum for Honda and blame the car company. Just like the windows phone. And yet your first notion is I am jumping to another provider, much along the way you keep saying but I see you are still here spouting where is your update.

I also buy what I like and sales people don't sway me. The big difference here is I don't go and complain for my choice I take responsibility for my own decisions and live with it.

Evidently you do not. You like to blame others for your choices. A pity a real pity.

LOL complete nonsense.  With your logic, the issue is with the car.  In this scenario, the issue is with the seller, VERIZON.  The icon is a great phone, top of the line hardware and software.  Luckily we have the option to go around Verizon and install the developer preview from Microsoft software.

The seller is not Verizon. The resellers of these devices are many of which Verizon is one

Your device can be the best in the world, but won't be worth spit if it's not supported. Just a pretty no longer sold paper weight.

Think for a moment if the windows devices are not selling on the nations largest carrier how long before the others drop it as well? Just think about it.

The Lumia Icon has a Verizon screen at boot up and has Verizon printed on the back and front. Verizon is the one that needs to approve the update.  The Lumia 930 is the international version of this device.  It doesn't have any of the Verizon markings and guess what it does have WP 8.1!!  Verizon is the problem here they are abandoning the device and making it not worth "spit".  But then again luckily Microsoft provides a work around so most users could sign up for the developer preview.  After that the updates will come straight from Microsoft bypassing Verizon.

The logo is called branding. My laptops have Acer, or Sony on boot up, it is on my unit. Same thing.

Verizon is not supporting it, now let's have other carriers not support it, oh wait I think I read T-Mobile dropped support for a windows phone I don't know the model number but dropped as well.

I wish all devices simply had system updates as iOS devices. But as of right now its not happening.

The constant posts of where is my update and the threats of leaving if we don't get it although good for venting it is doing absolutely no good. Still no updates, still no FCC intervention, no FTC intervention, and this is dragging on months now and no updates.

They don't have to give them is a fact, if and when they release any update is a bonus. Not a right.
