I don't have any suggestions for you. Especially considering I haven't used Backup Assistant or it replacement VZW Cloud since 2009 when there are other more consistent and easier to use sync options for contacts.

I know that I rely on my Backup Assistant daily, so I want to make sure that we get you up and running in no time. I just want to dig a little bit deeper, what seems to happen when you try to complete the back up? Are you able to log in through your MyVerizon and view the content from your Backup Assistant profile?
