Brand new lumia 928 arrived today: whenever lock screen activates it reboots

If i manually lock the screen it doesn't reboot, however, if I let it rest until the lock screen kicks in automatically it then reboots.  I did a soft reset and I was even able to get the latest OS and Firmware updates installed.  This didn't fix the problem.

Did I receive a brick?

If it has done this right from the beginning, with no other apps installed, then you should return it for a replacement.  As long as you are within the 14 day return window, you should receive a new device for the replacement.  Beyond that, you will get a CLNR.
