Can't get vcard contacts on Pantech Hotshot

I just got a Hotshot and have had nothing but problems with the contacts. The Backup Assistant fails to recognize the 60+ contacts stored online and tells me that the phone is sync'd, but there's only the basic 7 contacts on the phone. Trying to manually transfer the contacts as vcards from the old phone to the new fails. Have tried:

(1) saving the Backup assistant contacts as vcards, copying to the sdcard in the contacts folder, and going to Settings/Memory/Card Memory/My contacts.  it reports MyContacts is empty.  I exported a contact from the phone to the SDCard, so I'm sure I put it in the right spot.

(2) saving the vcards from the old phone to the PC and transferring to the SD Card. Same result as above.

(3) doing a bluetooth transfer from old phone to new phone. I can send a contact from the Hotshot to the old phone. but sending from the old phone to the new one I get a "Parsing vcard failed" message. Even tried pulling the same vcard that sent to the old phone, getting it back gives the same error.

fun fun. this all started when a CS rep had me do a 'restore phone' because one of the Software Updates kept failing (lots of threads here describing that problem). That's when the phone stopped talking to Backup Assistant so I couldn't restore contacts.  The update still fails, and the CS rep told me my best bet was to exchange the phone, but they'd charge me a $35 restocking fee even though I haven't even had it for 2 weeks. Ridiculous.

Hello NRJank! Boy, it really sounds like you've been having a frustrating time getting your contacts transferred to your Hotshot. I'm very sorry to hear it but I can help! I believe that the Backup Assistant application on your phone needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled in order to reset your account, which will allow it to accurately sync. Before attempting this procedure, make sure that data access is enabled on your line of service. If you have added a data block, you will not be able to complete this until the block is removed!

What you want to do is go to Media Center on your Hotshot, then go to Browse & Download. Select the Delete option from the menu in Browse & Download to remove/end your subscription to Backup Assistant. Once you've done this, you can reinstall the application from the Browse & Download menu.

You're very very close to succeeding. Two things.

1) Did you use the phone to format the memory card ? During the formatting the phone creates directories; each model of phone uses some directory names that are the same and some that are different. For example, our LG vx8370 uses the folder name "contact" while our Samsung u370 uses the folder name "my_contacts". If you did not use the phone to format the memory card and if you currently have information stored on that memory card, be aware that formatting the card in the phone in part will result in any information being erased that is stored on the memory card.

2) After I've transferred the vcards to the folder for contacts on the memory card, here are the steps that I have to follow in order to transfer them from the memory card into the phone's internal memory:

LG vx8370

After the vcards are on the memory card in the folder for contacts, navigate these phone menus:

Menu -> Settings & Tools -> Memory -> Card Memory -> My Contacts -> Move

Then select all the vcards you want to move. The phone will ask you "Move to Phone and restore defaults?"

Samsung u370

After the vcards are on the memory card in the folder for contacts, navigate these phone menus:

Menu -> Settings & Tools -> Memory -> Card Memory -> My Contacts -> Move

Then select all the vcards you want to move. The phone will ask you "Move Contacts to phone?"

I've had a few contacts that initially weren't transferable. For me, this was due to one of two things:

(1) the name of the contact had characters that one phone accepted that the other phone rejected

For example, I want certain contacts to appear at the end of all the other contacts. So I had an underscore symbol (_) in front of the name which caused one phone to make that entry be listed lasted. However, the other phone wouldn't accept a contact name with an underscore in front of the name. Once I removed the underscore, then the other phone happily let me transfer the contact

(2) The second phone rejected a contact because a particular field for that contact was not filled in; the first phone didn't have any problem with the contact not having that particular field filled in. Upon filling in that field with information, then the second phone happily let me transfer the contact

well, whatever the problem it's better now. I went to a VZW store and asked them to manually transfer the contacts. They plugged both phones into some system behind the counter, and 5 minutes later they were transferred. Then, I went and tried the backup assistant. It then sync'd just fine, and running backup assistant since then has worked fine. Not sure what the problem was, but glad it's better now.

I cannot get my contacts stored online to sync to my Pantech Hotshot.  The process appears to work on the web site and phone displays a message that it completed.  But, none of the contacts will sync/transfer to the phone.  I have created a backup of the contacts to my PC, transferred this file to the SD card, verified that it is there, navigated to the SD card memory on the phone and it says the My Contacts folder is empty.  I plugged the phone to my PC via the USB cable and navigated to the SD card>My Contacts and I can see all of the contacts.

I tried adding a contact as the OP found to work and tried editing some existing contacts but the syncing still does not work.

This is unacceptable.

I also do not see any way to uninstall Backup Asst on this phone.

did you try DionM_VZW's suggestion above for how to remove and re-add Backup Assistant to see if that makes the online Sync work? I thought I red elsewhere that certain apps couldn't be removed on the Hotshot, so I wouldn't be surprised if his instructions don't work on the Hotshot.

Yep.  Tried that.  Those instructions must not have been written by someone familiar with the Hotshot as the pathways described don't exist.

Hello again! It's true that my instructions won't remove the application, but it will end your current subscription. What's happening is Backup Assistant "thinks" that successful sync has already occurred, and therefore will not need to move anything new from one point to the next. What my instructions do is effectively trick the service into thinking that no previous sync attempts have been made, so it will look upon what's there as new data and move it. You shouldn't experience any problems after that. My apologies for using the word "Delete". In truth, you want to look for anything that sounds final, such as Remove, End Subscription, and so forth.

if the contacts are on the sd card, then go to settings>memory>card memory>my contacts. if you see contacts there, then go to more>move to phone. there should be a mark all, then hit move and it should transfer them to the phone.
