Can you check to see if the power is on w/o also causing it to power up?

How do you check to see if htc trophy is OFF without causing it to power up? If my phone is off, and I even touch the power button for a moment, he causes the phone to fully power up. Sometimes, I just want to make sure it is off without turning it on (such as in an airplane, in church, during a meeting, etc.).

Try the side or volume buttons, it's what I do,  Although it takes a bit for my phone to power up, if it doesn't light up, it's off
