Features Available in Extended Network Area?

I was recently in Gateway, CO (a small community in western CO).  I had 3 - 4 bars on my HTC 8x but when I attempted to read email or view a web page I was not able to.  I got a message that I was in an Extended Network area.

What features/services are/are not available in an Extended Network area?  Is there any way to get these features/services in an Extended Network area?

Hello JohnDD! In review of this coverage area, I found that this area has extended coverage. Data and text messages may not work in an extended coverage area. Voice calls will work; however, the extended coverage indicator may appear.
