HTC 8X glass screen shattered by 18-inch drop. Verizon says goto HTC. What the f? How do I get a replacement screen?

Screen is completely destroyed - shattered - how do I replace?  Verizon says go to HTC.  Lame?

5 inch drop here. Bought a new screen and replaced it - now I have a nice thin TPU case around it... Why would you expect that it wouldn't shatter?  And, why would you expect Verizon to cover your mistake?
