How do I add words to my device's dictionary?

Is there any way to add words or keyboard shortcuts to the Lumia Ikon keyboard, or will I have to spell out my sons name every. single. time.  Any help would be great. Thanks!

From the Lumia Icon (929) manual: 

Add a new word to the dictionary

If the word you want isn’t in the dictionary, write the word, tap it, and

tap the plus sign in the suggestion bar. Your phone also learns new

words when you have written them a few times.

If it hasn't picked it up, check your keyboard and language settings to see if there is a setting to "learn" your usage patterns....
