How do I make my phone reconnect to the data network?

I'm in an area that's allegedly full 3G coverage (40324 zip code), plenty of red on the map. But inside the office, I barely see one bar of phone coverage, and if I'm lucky I get 1x data connectivity.

I'd be fine with this if the data connection stayed stable throughout the workday. It doesn't, and I have to fully power my LG Vortex off and back on to get it to try and reconnect. There doesn't seem to be any other way of making the phone try and pick up the data connection again. I'm doing this multiple times a day.

If I go outdoors, the phone won't automatically reconnect then either, even though it gets a 3G connection when I power cycle it. Is there any way other than shutting down and restarting to force the phone to try and make a data connection again?

Have you tried reprogramming the phone at that location? Dial *228, option 1 to reprogram the phone. Reboot the phone if asked, then dial *228, option 2 to update your PRL (preferred roaming list).

The construction of the building might also interfere with the signal strength.

I agree with Ann154 in that an update of your PRL may improve things in your area, and it is true that a structure such as your place of business will in fact have an adverse affect on your signal strength. If you are still having problems connecting to 3G in your area, please contact us from a landline phone at 1-800/922-0204 from a landline phone in the area for additional troubleshooting. We may need to get our Network Repair Bureau involved to investigate this signal issue.

Thanks,

Thank you for the suggestions. I've done both steps but the basic issue is still the same. Once the connection drops, the phone will not acquire another connection unless I power-cycle it. If there's a way to force the phone to try to reconnect without shutting it down and turning it back on I'd be grateful to find out how. Appreciate the help.

Have you tried cycling the airplane mode? That will reset the radios without power cycling the phone.

Dave1138,

I am having the same issue only within the last few weeks. Have you found a resolution to this issue as it is becoming rather frustrating. Thanks.

Not sure why this post was marked as solved, the solutions suggested in the thread did not solve or even address the issue at all, unfortunately.

In a later post it was suggested that I should allow global dta roaming access for all trips and that seems to have stopped the connection drops I was experiencing.

Only the original poster (OP) can mark a post as the solution, if the post is no longer the solution the OP can unmark a post as the solution by going to the options link on the right side of the post and selecting the "Not the solution" option.

I'm the OP and I never marked this as solved. There is no option under Options to select "Not the solution" that I can see.

Anyway, as I noted above, enabling global roaming for all trips seems to have corrected the issue where the data connection drops and could only be reestablished by power cycling the phone. That solution came from a separate thread. I appreciate everyone's feedback.

It should be there within the options for the post that is currently marked as the solution. In other words, the options link/pull down in post #2. The only other thing is if the VZW employee marked it, but you as the OP should be able to unsolve even then.
