Backup assistant is using 70-80% of my battery (burning it to zero in 2-3 hours). How do I get rid of it.

I don't know if you can turn if off once it's enabled but the software is embedded into the OS by VZW and cannot be uninstalled.
If you cannot disable it you'll have to do a hard reset (factory reset; all data will be lost) and not enable it when running through the setup.
