I saw this in a tweet first thing this morning, and planned my day around it.  My wife isn't eligible for upgrade, but I was at the Microsoft Store in Atlanta, at opening, wearing my Windows Phone t-shirt that says on the back, "Love me, Love my app", because I figured I could deal with them and Verizon, tell Verizon to cancel my wife's contract, I'll pay the early termination fee, and I'd buy the phone for a penny, and I'll sell the Samsung Focus from Microsoft to pay the ETF.

After about an hour on the phone with Verizon, I could do this - early termination fee of $120, activation fee of $35, brings it to $155.  Plus a penny.  BUT - they said my wife would lose her phone number.  I had told her I was standing in a Microsoft store early in the conversation...  So she told me, if your wife isn't in a big hurry, I can send you the phone for $150, and she can keep her number.

Before going any further, I clarified that she was saying $150, no activation fee, no early termination fee, and was that before or after rebate?  She told me no activation, no ETF, and she was knocking off the rebate.  Ok, now you have my attention.  We worked out the details.  Then I asked if she wanted to know why this is so aggravating for me.  She said yes.  I told her that a week ago, I tried to get them to do just what she's doing now, except then I was willing to pay the $199 price and get the mail-in rebate.  I was told customer service wouldn't do it, I asked for Loyalty department, and they wouldn't talk to me due to the amount of time left on my contract, and I even talked to an exec rep that I'd made contact with as a result of letters to several execs.  Now all of a sudden she's offering me a deal that is $50 better than what I'd practically begged for.

Turns out that my contract date was wrong in the system, and that is what they went by last week when I talked with them, and that is why they wouldn't do anything for me.  Now that she corrected my contract date, my wife's phone is eligible for upgrade in November, so she could do it now.  Because of the aggravation I've been through with trying to get my wife a phone, she told me she's putting a promo on my wife's line, so for the next 12 months, the data plan will be discounted by $9.99, so instead of $30, it'll be $20 a month.

It's taken a while, but FINALLY, my wife will get her Trophy tomorrow.

So my question on this is will they blow away my current plan and create a new one?  The last time I used a system to upgrade a phone, VZW threw out my old plan and discounts and it took a while to get it fixed.

Upgrading your phone will only require a calling plan change in rare occasions due to phone compatibility with your calling plan.

I apologize for any changes made to your calling plan last time you upgraded your phone online. We have improved our online ordering process and upgrading your phone online is easier than ever. Be assured that any change to your calling plan (if any needed due to your phone selection) will be clearly disclosed online (please take some time to read all online disclosures) before the completion of your transaction.

If you prefer, we can process your upgrade in any store, or by phone at 1-800-922-024 (from 6am to 11pm CST). We will inform you of any changes to your calling plan (if any needed) before we complete your upgrade.
