LG Cosmos 2 - Remove Backup Assistant?

I'm trying to remove Backup Assistant from my LG Cosmos 2. I don't need to have my contacts list updated on a daily basis. I've deleted it twice, and it keeps coming back. There's no longer an option to delete it like there was the previous two times. I also don't have a data package, so as far as I can tell, this is costing me an additional charge. How do I get rid of this program?

I just posted the same thing under another thread.

Hello cinematic6436,

Backup Assistant is a great feature that is optional.  The application is pre-loaded on the Cosmos 2 and can not be completely removed. You can cancel the subscription and choose not to use the application, however you will see it under your list of applications.  If you have not been successful you would need to complete a factory reset to do so.  Click here to see visuals to complete factory reset.  Please keep in mind everything will be erased from the device so please backup prior if desired.  After the reset the device will prompt to be re-activated by dialing *228 send option 1.  Thank you.

I don't care if it stays on my phone so long as it doesn't start itself up anymore and try to back up my contacts.

How do I set it up so it doesn't try to back up my contacts anymore? I see options for when it'll upload my contacts, but not to stop it  completely.

I am also having this problem. When I wake up it is frozen. This is really sad customer service here. How do you delete it! I am sick of it charging me money!

We're all still waiting for a reply. How do I cancel my subscription to Backup Assistant?

Cinematic6436, I can certainly assist you with removing Backup Assistant from your phone. Please follow these instructions on our VZW support site. Afterwards, the application will be reset and contacts will no longer be saved on the website. You will want to make sure your contacts are backed up elsewhere. Also, I want to point out that you are not charged for daily use of Backup Assistant. The application is free to use. Also, since the application is pre-loaded on the device, there are no data transport charges to download the application.

As instructed, I took the following steps to disable Backup Assistant's automatic backup feature:

1. Go to Apps and start Backup Assistant

2. Select "Options"

3. Select "About"

4. Enter *73738#  (note: it won't appear anywhere on the phone's screen when you type it)

5. Exit Backup Assistant

Backup Assistant hasn't bothered me since.

Another unhappy Backup Assistant prisoner here.

Just tried the *73738# trick, hope it works!

The fact that this thread is tagged "solved" seems premature. Judging from this and other threads, a lot of folks don't want to have automatic backups shoved down our throats.

I'm with you. The only reason I would figure that Verizon would force this upon their customers, is as an information gathering tool. Every person who uses the BA has many names, numbers, and other information within their contacts/address books. I am finally through with Verizon once and for all. Once this contract runs out, I'm moving on. For too long have I fought with Verizon's PROPRIETARY protocols, and I am done with it. All the other companies seem to let one load their own ringtones, and have more freedom of choice when it comes to managing ones phone. Verizon feels they know what is best for all of their customers, so they force these things upon us, and why? It's all in the quest for the almighty dollar.

After spending about 2 hours trying to find out how to remove this Backup assistant from my phone, I have learned it would have been easier to just cancel my account with VZW, because I still haven't found an answer as to how to get rid of this annoying little app. And in my opinion, the 73738# is nothing more than Verizon slapping you in the face for not wanting to use their BA app, because I think all it does is activate another marketing tool to target those who wish not to use this piece of app. My last two phones from Verizon had MYSTERIOUSLY dumped out on me, one about 2 weeks before my contract was up, and the second was about 3 weeks before my contract was up. I found this very curious how my phones worked great up until then, and then one lost it's screen, and the other would boot up and shut down 2 or 3 times before it would stay on. I am through with VZW and their greed and unfair business practices. They really do smoke a pole. It's funny how the spell checker on this editor finds the word Verizon as a misspelled word, using their own editor on their website. Bye bye Verizon.

I was able to do the *73738# feature to remove (or at least disable) the backup assistant on my LG Cosmos 2 and I have not had the backup assistant pop up for the past 2 weeks. Oddly though ever since then I have had numerous other advertising and apps for "local weather",  "local shopping deals", "what happened on this day" and other such pop ups when I go to use my phone.

Is it possible that the *73738# activates something else as well as deactivates the backup assistant?

I do not use my phone for data at all (as it is basically used for just emergencies anyway) but so far in the same 2 week period my phone has accumulated a total of 3231KB of data received. I just went onto our account and looked at the totals displayed there and those data units are not accounted for (account shows 9KB total for the cycle from my phone). Since my account does not have any data plan associated with my phone I REALLY hope that this was not some sort of scam to plant other stuff on my phone. Where did this solution come from? You stated in your post "As instructed..." Instructed by whom?

I am a fan of a backup assistant "in theory" and think that it should be a standard on all cell phones by nature, however the programmers at Verizon (or wherever they got it from) really screwed up on this one with a major flaw since it does not appear to work "automatically" and still required me to "manually unlock my phone" to proceed and then "manually press the end button" to close the app. This app should work behind the scene and should never even come up on the screen at all. Be that as it may, I no longer appear to have the backup assistant feature active on my phone for now so the original intent of the code for this solution seems to be working.

I am just cringing while waiting for that other shoe...

The data used by Backup Assistant is free. Though there is a more advanced plan that has a fee attached.

I do agree that there should be an option to disable and re-enable the app. Seems like removing the app is a bit drastic for something that may be needed on occasion.

I just changed my BA options to do the backup late at night. So maybe I won't be as much as a nag this way. It would be nice if there were an option do it weekly or something instead of daily.  I also agree that the app should be totally transparent, without having to push End.  Something for Verizon Wireless to work on for the next update.

I deactivate mine, except when it is nice.

If I add a phone book entry, I can push it to the cloud by re-enabling it.

To re-enable, just run it, answer next etc.

It updates.

Then I deactivate by *73738# (which is *reset#, kinda easier to remember).

If I edit online, I need to activate it before synching, then deactivate it.

I had the trouble that every morning when I went to use my phone, it started doing the "late night" backup.

And I was having pathetic battery life (12 hours).

12 is totally unacceptable for a "feature" (non-smart phone).

AFter disabling BA, it seems much better. Like 4-5 days.

Did you notice that Verizon changed the standby from 800 hours to 13?

The woman I talked to said that after they get around to real world testing, they sometimes twek the numbers.

13 hours is 1.6% of 800.

Not 80%, not 50%, not even 10%. 1.6%!!!!

I asked if I could return it, and she said I was just out of the 14 days.

800 vs 13. Sounds a bit like a bait and switch to me...

Super!  Seems to have worked.  Go into Backup Assistant on phone and it shows as needing activation.  Problem solved!

Now how to I get rid of all that weather texting?

In the past when I have had a problem with an App.  Go into your apps and see if it can be removed from there.  If not, open, go into options and see if the same thing will work.  If not, call Verizon tell them you want it removed.  I had a shopper app or something that kept wanting to install.  I rate it up there on the high level of intrusion and spam.   On rare occasion I reinstall the Backup Assistant, then immediately do the reset again.

Congrats, I am glad it worked for you!

Please don't tell me what features are so great I HAVE to use them.  I don't want the backup assistant.  You don't need to know why and your job is not to convince me to use this app.  How do I turn off the AUTO backup on the COSMOS 2.  I will MANUALLY sync with the backup assistant when I want to...not every night.

This should not require a hard reset and loss of data...thats just silly

Let's be honest - the Backup Assistant isn't a bad idea, but a sad implemenation!  My wife just received her new Cosmos 2 and she's having to charge the phone twice aday because every time she picks up the phone it is in the backup assistant and has drained the battery.  This is a major NO GO on this phone and if I can't get it stopped today it will be going back in the box and back to the Verizon store...  Ok Phone, horrible Verizon software!!!  So, tell us how to fix it....

Remember, these new LG's are coming with an App preloaded called "Daily Scoop" This is the battery draining app which need to be removed. I am also trying to find a way to remove backup assistance because it's anoying having to respond to it EVERY DAY!(hopefully the *73738* thing works). Again, "Daily Scoop" is the spawn of satan, pre-loaded, battery draining app which need to be dealt with.

BA would be a great featrure, IF IT WORKED PROPERLY.  I had the BA set to run "Late Night" and, like other posts, I woke up to a drained battery and faint screen.  If it opened, ran and closed very few people would have a problem with it.  But because the software is immature it hangs ALL NIGHT, EVERY NIGHT.  I had to go to a Verizon store to get a hard reset and then spent time redoing the settings on 2 phones.  I guess VZW couldn't spend the extra $$ to test the software or to offer option for a weekly, monthly or semi annual backups.

Does the LG Octane have these same problems?  I'm still within my 14 day window,

Like so many others in this discussion, I was surprised to find the battery in my LG Cosmos 2 so depleted that I went to the Verizon Wireless store where I bought it and told them the phone died.  The tech removed the battery then immediately put it back and the screen light up telling me sometimes the phone "freezes".  I thougth all was well until the next morning the same dead phone.  Again I when back to VW store and this time the tech boosted the battery and once again it worked until the next day when i had a dead phone again.  This time I charged it and noticed that my selected "charging screen" was absent and instead I saw the green battery charging icon.  I previously noticed that the Backup Assistant screen would not disappear until I hit "End" as the screen dictated.  Well, dawn breaks over Marblehead and I realize that the Backup Assistant activates the screen but when it finishes it continues to light the screen and drain the battery to the point that it takes a couple of hours to charge.  I went back to the VW store with my observations and and asked how to I set BA to manual only as I had seen no such choice under the Options for this app.  I was told I was right that BA indeed drains the battery and there is no way to go manual.  The tech did not know how to deactivate BA and I am grateful to all of you for this discussion and (hopefully) the 73738# solution.

Thank you all for the help.

Does anyone know if any of these suggestions work. Verizon couldn't answer me.
